Course Description and Purpose/Objectives


The course begins with a survey of the colonisation of North America, Europeans and their
attempts to eliminate indigenous Americans. The history of the colonies, the American Revolution
and her independence from Britain, and the American Civil War are discussed. An overview of the
U.S.A. since 1877, including its emergence and influence as a world power; America in world
affairs; the internal and external factors of development; and the position of the U.S.A. after World
War II are among the series of issues to be examined.

Student’s Learning Outcomes


At the end of this Course, students are expected to:
i. Learn how scholars study the historical past
ii. Analyse the conditions under which the colonists fought and successfully attained
independence
iii. Record the sequence of important events in the struggle for North America and, events
that led to the American Revolution
iv. Understand why Europeans competed for power in North America and how their struggle
affected Native Americans
v. Show a clear and thorough understanding of the history of developing nations using clearly
appropriate examples from the situation of the United States and Canada
