As a graduate of education program, I have always been make sure to work in the
relevant field of my specialization. In connection to this, I worked as a Senior High School
teacher at Excelsior Polytechnic Academy way back August 2022 until January 2024. Recently, I
was one of the lucky applicants to be given an opportunity to work as a Contract of Service
Instructor at DEBESMSCAT Cawayan Campus. I am handling subjects from different
department related to Mathematics. Along the transition had happened, one of the best
contributions I had offered to my first work was sharing my field of expertise to my learners by
giving them necessary knowledge and competencies needed in the subject and sharing different
strategies in teaching through the utilization of Information and Communication Technology
(ICT).
Information and Communication Technology (ICT) plays significant roles in the field of
teaching profession thus teachers are expected to become competent in this area. However, not
all teaching-related activities need ICT specifically in the Mathematics program where
traditional approach is more likely necessary and convenient to students. In contrast to that,
teachers are encouraged to be more knowledgeable of the utilization of ICT in teaching. Upon
evaluation, I believed in my ability and sufficient knowledge on the use of ICT integration in
teaching. Last December 2023, as a demand for personal and professional development I
enrolled to a 10 day Philippine Professional Standard for Teachers (PPST) based Training on
ICT in Education which gives emphasis on the what, when and how to use ICT specifically in
teaching fields. The use of ICT integration in teaching was been already established in my first
work, I used different software applications to make a presentation. Basically, I used PowerPoint
presentation and Canva to present the content of the topics to be discussed as well as the use of
projector to have an interactive discussion. In terms of access to information, I know how to
identify credible sources and not reliable sources since I have a knowledge on academic
research. Most importantly, ICT plays vital role in education in distance learning because it
enables remote learning opportunities, allowing students to participate in classes, access
educational resources, and collaborate with peers and instructors regardless of geographical
location. I am capable to use laptop and computers, software applications and its use such as
Google classroom, Google meet, zoom and the likes which are primarily useful in teaching and
learning process. Relevant to this, ICT through the use of multimedia presentation with use of
different digital images, video clips, concept maps and charts employing appropriate animations
and transitions allows to get the interest of the students. Thus, it helps the teaching and learning
process more interactive, accessible and engaging. Now, I am teaching Mathematics and as you
know this subject needs a thorough effort of preparation so that students will find the lesson
interesting. I used the whiteboard in the classroom and sometimes a very manageable Math Input
Panel in my laptop helps me not to manually solve the problem on the board. Instead, together
with the students we tried to use the MIP as part of the instructional material. The graph, charts,
shapes, equations, symbols are easily presented using the multimedia presentation. In terms of
giving feedback and evaluation, it is easier to use record with transparency the creation,
administration and grading of assessments through software applications such as Excel and
spreadsheets. You don’t need to manually record the score of the students but it’s easier and
timely relevant to keep and track the record of the students. Now, I am confident that I have
acquired the 21st necessary skills that a teacher needs to obtain. Furthermore, ICT helped a lot in
my teaching profession which made administrative tasks and teaching responsibilities such as
instruction and lesson preparation make less to burden.
Generally, the emergence of ICT both established a pros and cons in the status of
education the school. In Cawayan Campus, the unavailability of the resources is a great struggle
for both teachers and students. Not all rooms have a smart TV or projector to be use in the
presentation of the lesson. So, the PowerPoint presentation that the teacher have prepared will
likely not useful and even the discussion is less interactive. On the same way, students will be
deprive of the learning opportunities in the lesson provided by the teachers as well the
knowledge they could get in using the technology itself. Teachers believed in the idea as
facilitator of learning, but the lack of resources hinders the students to have access to
information. On the other hand, the implications of using ICT in education enhances the ability
to access to educational resources and information beyond traditional classroom settings.
It increases student engagement and motivation through interactive and multimedia learning
experiences and even improve collaboration and communication among students, educators, and
parents. ICT recognizes as a way in preparation of students for the demands of the digital age
and the global workforce. Indeed, ICT as a whole help teaching process easier and manageable
with the availability of resources and necessary skills helpful in fulfilling different teachnologies
main function and utilization.
