The ocean floor begins at a coast where dry land

A v o lc a n o (vahl»K AY »noh) is a m ountain that builds up
around an opening in Earth’s crust. Sometimes a volcano
explodes. Like an earthquake, this event can change the
land quickly.

Volcano Formation
You learned about Earth’s layers, the crust, mantle,
and core. Parts o f the mantle and crust have melted rock
called m a g m a . Sometimes m agm a m oves up through a
large crack in the crust and flow s onto land. M elted rock
that flow s onto land is called lava. Lava, rocks, and ash
are forced out onto Earth’s surface. They pile up in layers
and form a m ountain. Som etim es a volcanic m ountain

What is erosion?
Broken rocks are som etim es m oved

is the wearing aw ay and movement of
weathered rock. M oving water, wind,

People change the land too. Some changes are

Other changes are much larger.
In som e places trees are cut to build roads, stores,

How Soil Forms The Layers of Soil
The m aking o f soil starts with
weathering. W eathering causes
rocks to break dow n into sm aller

Living things die and decay in the

Fact O p inion

How do we use air and water?

Air is an im portant resource. Air surrounds
Technology Earth. M oving air brings clouds from which
e - G lo s s a ry and e -R e v ie w online
rain or snow falls. M oving air is used to help
a t w w w .m acm illan m h .co m
m ake electricity. People need the oxygen in air
to breathe.
Water is another im portant resource. People
use water for farm ing, cooking, drinking, and
traveling. Factories use water to m ake things.
People swim, fish, and play in water too.
Air and water are renewable resources. The
oxygen in air is replaced by plants when they
m ake food. The w ater we use is replaced when
rain or snow falls from clouds.
Freshwater Sources
M ost of E arth’s water is in the
salty oceans. People can not use it
to drink. They m ust drink freshwater,
or water that is not salty. Freshw ater
is found in rivers, ponds, stream s,
and m ost lakes. It is also found
underground. Water that is held in
rocks below the ground is
called groundwater.
Glaciers, icebergs, and sea ice
are other exam ples o f freshwater.
However, this w ater is frozen. It
w ould not be easy to change this
frozen w ater to liquid water. Only
a sm all part of freshwater is usable.
Freshw ater is a limited resource.

W a te r seeps into the ground.

It collects in the spaces of
underground rocks. ►

▲ Glen Canyon Dam in Arizona
form s a reservoir. How do people get water?
N o t everyone lives near freshwater.
H ow can people move water to
where they need it?

Aqueducts and Reservoirs

In some places pipes or ditches,
c a lle d aqueducts (A H * k w u h * d u k ts ),
carry water to where it is needed.
In other places, people build a wall,
called a dam, across a river. The
w ater behind the dam gathers in
a kind of lake, called a reservoir
(R E H *z 니h«vwor). The reservoir stores
w ater for people to use.

EXPLAIN
Treating Water
In m any cities and tow ns, w ater is m ade safe for
people to drink. This happens at a water treatment
plant. First, w ater sits still in a tank. H eavy things in
w ater fall to the bottom o f the tank. Water is then
m oved through layers of gravel and sand. These layers
trap m ud and other tiny things. Chem icals can be
added to kill any harm ful living things in the water.
The clean w ater is then piped to people.

What can happen to air

Air and w ater can be polluted. Water can be

Pollution
is w hat happens
P o llu tio n (puh«LEW «shun)
when harm ful things get into water, air, and

Pollution happens naturally. Volcanoes and
