Types of Portland cement according to ASTM and IQ Classification

Type I (OPC): For use in general concrete construction where the special properties specified for Types II,
III, IV and V are not required (Ordinary Portland Cement).
Type II: For use in general concrete construction exposed to moderate sulfate action, or where moderate heat
of hydration is required.
Type III (RHPC): For use when high early strength is required (Rapid Hardening Cement).
Type IV (LHC): For use when low heat of hydration is required (Low Heat Cement).
Type V (SRPC): For use when high sulfate resistance is required (Sulfate Resisting Cement).

The symbols (I, V, W) led’s to the Ordinary, Sulfate resistance and white cement respectively
* The compressive strength at any later age is higher than the resistance obtained at an earlier age (less).
** One of two methods can be used
Note: For each standard resistance class there are two classes of early strength, a class with normal early
strength symbolized by (N) and a class with high early strength symbolized by (R).

Example According to IQS 5/2019
The chemical analysis of cement presented in the table below, and the compressive strength at (2‐days=22MPa and
28‐days=44MPa), fineness (Blain)=320 Kg/m2

1. Find the main compounds

2. Is it confirm to the Iraqi specification?

Oxide Iraqi
Content %a
SiO2 20.83
Al2O3 5.08
Fe2O3 3.36
CaO 63.01
SO3 2.15
MgO 2.10
L.O.I 2.64
I.R 1.21

Solution
1. Main compound:

C3S= 4.07 (CaO) – 7.60 (SiO2) – 6.72 (Al2O3) – 1.43 (Fe2O3) – 2.85 (SO3)

=4.07 (63.01) – 7.60 (20.83) – 6.72 (5.08) – 1.43 (3.36) – 2.85 (2.15) =53.12

C2S = 2.87 (SiO2) – 0.754 (3CaO.SiO2) = 2.87 (20.83) – 0.754 (53.12) =19.73

C3A = 2.65 (Al2O3) – 1.69 (Fe2O3) =2.65 (5.08) – 1.69 (3.36) =7.78

C4AF= 3.04 (Fe2O3) =3.04 (3.36) =7.78

2. Checking according to IQS No. 5:

 Chemical analysis:
1. C3A=7.78 ≥ 3.5 % OK
2. SO3 =2.15≥ 2.8% (for C3A>3.5%) OK
3. MgO=2.10≤ 5% OK
4. L.O.I=2.64≤4% OK
5. I.R=1.21≤1.5% OK
 Physical requirements:
1. compressive strength =22MPa at 2‐days ≥20MPa
compressive strength =44MPa at 28‐days ≥ 42.5MPa
So, the type R 42.5 (ordinary Portland cement)
2. fineness (Blain)=320 Kg/m2≥ 280 Kg/m2 ok
So the cement is ordinary Portland cement type R 42.5 (conforms to IQS No.5)
