10- English

I. Objectives
At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to:
a. define an argumentative essay
b. identify the parts and features of an argumentative essay; and
c. compose an argumentative essay
II. Subject Matter
a. Topic: Writing an Argumentative Essay

III. Procedure

A. Motivation
 Good morning, class!  Good morning, ma’am!

 I will show you some images which you  (Students will comply)
will try to guess what they are doing. I
will give you time to explain and defend
your answer based on what you observe
on the image.
B. Presentation
 Since you all gave your insights on our
short activity just a while ago, what do
you think is our topic for today?  “our topic for today is about arguments.”

 Very good!

 Now, these are our objective for the  (Student will read the objective on the
class. (The objectives will be shown on screen)

C. Discussion
 Based on our motivation, you guess
correctly what our topic would be. It is
about argumentative, but through text.
But first, let us define argumentative
and essay separately.

 Now, what is argumentative?  “The word argumentative is defined as


having or showing a tendency to
disagree or argue.”

 Very good, how about essay?  “Essay, means a short piece of writing
on a particular subject.”

 Putting in these two together,


argumentative essay, is a kind of writing
that aims to make the reader agree with
the writer’s opinion about a
controversial or a debatable issue.

 For example, this is the issue.


“Malacañang told mayors to follow the
priority list for the coronavirus disease
2019 (Covid-19) vaccination.” Now,
what is your stand on the issue? You
only have to choose between the two,  (Students will answer)
agree or disagree.

 If you agree with the issue, let’s have


this as your claim or thesis statement,
“Mayors should not skip the COVID-19
vaccine line since they are not in the
priority list”. On the other hand, if you
happen to disagree with the issue, let’s
have this as your claim or thesis
statement, “Mayors should also be
prioritized for vaccination, so they could
influence their constituents to get
vaccinated as well”. Remember, you
only have to take one side. Choose only
one between the two claims.

 And this is actually the first step in


developing your argumentative essay.
You have to formulate your CLAIM or
ARGUMENTATIVE on the issue. Now,
let’s say you already have your claim or
argument. “Mayors should not skip the
COVID-19 vaccine line since they are
not in the priority list”, the next thing you
will do is to support you claim by
providing EVIDENCE.

 Now, where do we find evidence? It


could be from your prior knowledge or
personal experience. Next is from an
opinion. And lastly, from a reliable
books and articles. So there, the step
two. Look for evidence to support your
claim/argument.

 Parts of Argumentative Essay. The


introduction, body, and conclusion.  (Students listen to the discussion)
What are the things that you are
allowed to write in your introduction?
There are, introducing the issue, give
background information, and state your
claim/thesis statement. Next is body,
you have to present your evidence.
Take of these, each paragraph must
contain one reason and its supporting
details. And lastly, the supporting
details may include examples, statistics
personal experiences, or quotations. In
body, it also include the
COUNTERCLAIM and rebuttal.

 This part may be written as another


paragraph. The counterclaim is your
fourth paragraph.

 Now what is counterclaim?  “The counterclaim is the opposite. This


is the opposing argument.”

 Excellent answer. In writing your


argumentative essay, it is not only how
well you defend your stand. But you
also have to site the opposing argument
then refute it.

 Now let’s talk about the conclusion.


Conclusion includes a general
statement that supports your claim or
thesis statement, a quotation, and a call
to action. We are now in the last step,
step three, write your Argumentative
essay following this format. Which are
the Introduction, Body, and Conclusion.
D. Application
 Now that we've discussed the parts of  (Students will write their answer in their
an argumentative essay, and explore activity notebook)
it’s purpose. Let’s see if you deeply
understand the topic. Tell whether the
statement is true or false. Write T if it is
true, and F if it is false. Place your
answers in your notebook or on a
separate sheet of paper.

introduction, body, and conclusion.
3. The claim is also known as the main
thesis of the essay.

 Now, what is an argumentative essay?  “Argumentative essay aims to
convey and defend an opinion or
stand by supporting it with truthful,
factual, and relevant evidence.”

F. Evaluation
