BBR 3200 EMPLOYEE MOTIVATION (45 CREDIT HOURS)

Prerequisite: BBR 3150 Foundations of Human Resource Management


Course Purpose

The purpose of this course is to demonstrate various strategies used in organizations to build self-
esteem of workers in the workplace.

Expected Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course the learner should be able to will:

1. Describe motivation process

2. Illustrate effective reward systems used in organizations

3. Apply various motivation theories in modern workplace scenarios

4. Appreciate the need for self-drive and personal productivity in a work place

Course Content

Week one:
Meaning, importance of motivation to organization and employees. Needs of employees and
organization:
Week 2 :Individual and organizational needs, physical and psychological needs.
Week 3 : Forms of motivation: intrinsic and extrinsic motivation.
Week 4 Motivation process: circular process.
Week 5& 6 Motivation theories and application to motivation: Needs theories of motivation,
behaviour theories, content theories, Process Theories of motivation., fear and punishment
theory, reward, carrot and stick,
Week 7 Morale: dealing with individual morale problems, team morale, demotivated employees ,
raising morale of workers.
Week 8Providing an effective reward system: types of rewards; importance of a good reward
system.
Week 9,10 Motivation strategies: environment, development opportunities, work itself,
leadership, cultural environment. Motivation and job satisfaction: Factors that affect job
satisfaction, job satisfaction and performanace.
Week 11 Motivation and money:financial incentives,pros and cons. Individual Motivation:
Identifying personal motivators, maximizing on motivators, evaluating and adapting.
Week 12 Job enrichment and job enlargement

Lectures, Individual and Group discussions and presentations, Tutorials, Case studies, Role play,
and Guest lecturers

Continuous Assessment Tests 30%
End of semester examination 70%
