Here’s a recap of the amazing news from the past two weeks
What do elementary school children in St. Swithun’s, in the UK, and in Mumias Township in Kenya possibly have
in common? Well, believe it or not, they wrote a book! Cosmic Cats is a collection of stories written by students
from both of these schools, and the money raised will be used to build a community library in West Kenya. The
book is full of stories about cats, sure to make you smile! Plus, every book sold helps make the library dream come
true. Organized by The Nasio Trust and author Sylvia Vetta, this project is all about making education available to
everyone. Students from Mumias Township Primary School are already excited, looking forward to the chances
this library will offer.
2. Is it time to obliviate?
Be honest: have you ever waited for a letter from Hogwarts or asked yourself which house the Sorting Hat would
send you to? Harry Potter is definitely a part of many people’s childhood and is still important for many of us
today. Well, some say it’s time to put away the magic wands. Miriam Margolyes, the actress who played Professor
Pomona Sprout, thinks adult fans should "grow up" and move on. Certainly, some Potterheads, as Harry Potter
fans are called, argue that the stories are still important for adults too. So, from wedding themes to fan accounts
on Instagram, the magic continues. Whether you’re a Gryffindor or just a muggle, should we keep our ‘expecto
patronum’ or is it time to ‘obliviate’?
3. Idris Elba dream for Sherbro Island: the city of the future!
Successful superstar, Idris Elba’s plans off stage are even bigger than any roles he’s ever played. He wants to
turn Sierra Leone’s Sherbro Island into a "smart city that is also good for the environment." The plan is to develop
the island’s economy while keeping its character. The project, a team effort between the government and private
companies, includes wind power for electricity, a separate economic system and places to charge electric vehicles.
At first, it was just about tourism, but now, according to Elba, it’s more about changing how people see Africa’s
growth. The island is seen as a city that can change and still keep its African culture. It seems that the project’s
future is as bright as Elba’s star power.
NEWSBITE: PART 6
What happens when we mix together different generations in a work environment? Some of you might say they
have different professional goals or different attitudes when it comes to job responsibilities. All of these might be
true, but there’s something else that we certainly couldn’t expect: language! Gen Z employees have just arrived
in the market, they are smart and learn quickly, they have good customer service, they have an amazing academic
record and...it is not enough! These new employees are getting fired because they communicate at work how they
do on social media. They often use words such as ‘like’ and ‘totally’ and it doesn’t come across as intelligent and
professional. So, what’s the message here? It’s not just about speaking right but finding the perfect mix of being
real and professional.
After nine years, China sees a rise in the number of marriages, with 7.68 million couples saying "I do" in 2023 – a
12.4% jump from the year before! The government said there were 845,000 more marriages compared to 2022,
though still below the record of 13.47 million in 2013. This increase in weddings is a result of the government’s
efforts to deal with the country’s low birth rates because of the one-child policy from the ’80s. The government’s
promise of a "birth-friendly society" is encouraging, with plans to reduce childbirth costs, improve parental leave
benefits, and encourage population growth over the years.
The German Parliament celebrated a historic moment as Heike Heubach, 44, became its first deaf lawmaker, filling
in for Uli Grotsch. Heubach, who worked in industry management before, received happy claps and hand waves
from her colleagues when she arrived. Speaker Barbel Bas spoke of the importance of this special moment. To
show how important it is for everyone to be included in parliament, Heubach has a special seat in the meeting
hall; she will have a team of interpreters, people who will translate sign language to German, close to her to help
her to understand speeches and questions. Another interpreter with a microphone will help everyone understand
during her own speeches, showing how important it is for everyone to be included in parliament.
