Course Description and Information
General Orientation course on skills pertinent to students for successful completion of their undergraduate degree.
This course is 1 credit hour. Prerequisite: Acceptance into the College of Engineering. This course is a requirement
for all engineering students! It is suggested to take this course the first semester after acceptance to the College of
Engineering. This class is designed to promote success in the study of engineering at UIC, use the resources
presented to your benefit!
Course Content
The most up to date schedule for the course will be posted on BlackBoard, be sure to check that for class content and
assignments regularly. There will be 5 assignments assigned during the duration of the course.
Attendance
Attendance and participation in this course is very important, the content we are presenting is unique in that it is
designed to ensure you have the most successful experience in the College of Engineering here at UIC; it is not
available in any textbook or conveniently online in a concise and packaged manner as designed for this course, and
therefore attendance is mandatory. In addition to your attendance, it is crucial that you are present and participating in
the class. Participation is defined as not doing other coursework during ENGR 100 and only using electronic devices
such as your phone or laptop with direct expressed permission of the instructor. If extenuating circumstances arise
and you miss a class, contact the instructor as soon as is possible to have your absence considered excused. Excused
absences will not be counted against a student’s attendance, and communication is key in this course. Missing two or
more classes, unexcused, will result in an automatic failure and repeat of the course.
Policy for Missed or Late Work
Missed or late work will not be accepted unless previously authorized or extenuating circumstances arise. You should
inform the instructor as soon as possible if this occurs. In cases of future events, the student is expected to make
arrangements with the instructor to submit work either on time, or in advance, if possible. Missing one assignment will
result in an unsatisfactory grade in the course.
Electronic Communication
The primary method of communication in this course is done via Blackboard. The student is expected to check
blackboard on a regular basis. In addition, blackboard announcements are sent via e-mail to your UIC provided e-mail
address. The student is expected to check their UIC email, at minimum, twice per week and fully read all
announcements sent to them. Missing an email communication or posting on blackboard is not considered a valid

excuse in this course.
Academic Integrity Policy
As an academic community, UIC is committed to providing an environment in which research, learning, and
scholarship can flourish and in which all endeavors are guided by academic and professional integrity. All members of
the campus community–students, staff, faculty, and administrators–share the responsibility of insuring that these
standards are upheld so that such an environment exists. Instances of academic misconduct by students will be
handled pursuant to the Student Disciplinary Policy: go.uic.edu/disciplinarypolicy
Grading
S (Satisfactory) will be assigned based on completion of all assignments and attendance.
U (Unsatisfactory) will mean it is necessary for you to repeat the course to complete the graduation requirement.
Religious Holidays
Students who wish to observe their religious holidays shall notify the instructor by the tenth day of the semester of the
date when they will be absent unless the religious holiday is observed on or before the tenth day of the semester. In
such cases, the student shall notify the faculty member at least five days in advance of the date when he/she will be
absent. The faculty member shall make every reasonable effort to honor the request, not penalize the student for
missing the class, and if an examination or project is due during the absence, give the student an exam or assignment
equivalent to the one completed by those students in attendance. If the student feels aggrieved, he/she may request
remedy through the campus grievance procedure. http://oae.uic.edu/religious-calendar/
