SECTION – 4 FIRST AID MEASURES

General Advice: Immediate medical attention is required.

Main Symptoms: Burn. Central nervous system depression. Liver and kidney injuries may occur.
Inhalation of vapors in high concentration may cause shortness of breath
After Inhalation: If inhaled, remove to fresh air. Loosen tight clothing such as a collar, tie, belt or
waistband. If not breathing, give artificial respiration. If breathing is difficult, give oxygen. It may be

dangerous to the person providing aid to give mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. Get medical attention
immediately.
Serious Inhalation: Evacuate the victim to a safe area as soon as possible. Loosen tight clothing
such as a collar, tie, belt or waistband. If breathing is difficult, administer oxygen. If the victim is not
breathing, perform mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. WARNING: It may be hazardous to the person
providing aid to give mouth-to- mouth resuscitation when the inhaled material is toxic, infectious
or corrosive. Seek immediate medical attention.
After skin contact: Call medical doctor or poison control center immediately. Remove all clothing.
Patient should be immediately placed in an emergency shower and skin should be flushed with
large amount of water for at least 20 minutes. If phenol has contaminated the face or head, victim
should wear goggles in the shower to prevent phenol from entering the eyes. After emergency
shower, swab affected area(s) of the patient with cotton soaked in polyethylene glycol 300 (PEG) or
PEG 400 for a minimum of 10 to 20 minutes. Do not rub. After treatment with PEG, patient should
be transported to an emergency medical facility for cardiac monitoring and further treatment.
Phenol may have an effect on many different organ systems, especially the heart and kidneys. Even
if exposure is small, patient should be admitted for at least 24 hours for observation. Dispose off
contaminated shoes and clothing in accordance with all local, regional, national and international
regulations.
After eye contact: Immediate medical attention is required. Check for and remove any contact
lenses. Immediately flush eyes with running water for at least 15 minutes, keeping eyelids open.
Cold water may be used. Do not rub affected area. Get medical attention immediately.
After ingestion: Do NOT induce vomiting. Never give anything by mouth to an unconscious person.
Loosen tight clothing such as a collar, tie, belt or waistband. Ingest immediately about 350 ml (5
ml/kg body weight) of activated charcoal slurry. Get medical attention if symptoms appear. Note:
To prepare activated charcoal slurry, mix thoroughly 50 gm of activated charcoal in 400 ml (about 2
cups) water. Get medical attention immediately.
Advice to physician: Product is corrosive material. In case of inhalation prophylactic treatment to
prevent pulmonary edema is important. Phenol causes strong caustic burns of the skin and mucous
membranes due to its protein degenerating action. The skin initially discolors white, later red. After
initial pain, local anesthesia appears. Absorption poisoning by large amounts of phenol is possible
also through small affected skin regions and quickly leads to paralysis of the central nervous system
as well as strong depression of the body temperature. Possible perforation of stomach or esophagus
should be investigated. Do not give chemical antidotes. Marked decrease in blood pressure may
occur with moist rales, frothy sputum, and high pulse pressure. Systematic damage to kidneys, liver
and heart as well as neuropsychiatric disturbances are produced. Treat symptomatically.

4. Description of First Aid Measures

For advice, contact a Poisons Information Centre (e.g. phone Australia 131 126; New Zealand 0800
764 766) or a doctor.

Inhalation: Remove victim from area of exposure - avoid becoming a casualty. Remove
contaminated clothing and loosen remaining clothing. Allow patient to assume most comfortable
position and keep warm. Keep at rest until fully recovered. If patient finds breathing difficult and
develops a bluish discolouration of the skin (which suggests a lack of oxygen in the blood - cyanosis),
ensure airways are clear of any obstruction and have a qualified person give oxygen through a face
mask. Apply artificial respiration if patient is not breathing. Seek immediate medical advice.

Skin Contact: If skin contact occurs, remove contaminated clothing and wash skin with running
water. If irritation occurs seek medical advice.

Eye Contact: If in eyes, wash out immediately with water. In all cases of eye contamination it is a
sensible precaution to seek medical advice.

Ingestion: Rinse mouth with water. If swallowed, give a glass of water to drink. If vomiting occurs give
further water. Seek immediate medical assistance.

Indication of immediate medical attention and special treatment needed: Treat symptomatically.
Following ingestion admission to hospital should be the first priority. Gastric lavage or emesis should
be performed as soon as possible to minimise absorption and is recommended within four hours of
ingestion. Gastric lavage or emesis should not be attempted unless medical expertise or adequate
facilities are available. Ethanol may be given intravenously as an antidote to prevent build-up of toxic
metabolites and increase excretion of unchanged ethylene glycol by the kidneys. Uraemia, pulmonary
oedema and metabolic acidosis can occur and dialysis, preferably haemodialysis, may be employed
to treat these complications and to remove ethylene glycol and its metabolites from the blood.
Ethylene glycol can cause central nervous system depression and metabolic acidosis. Consider
removal by gastric lavage. Blockade of the diacid/hydroxyacid metabolites may follow competitive
inhibition of alcohol dehydrogenase with ethanol or 4-methyl pyrazole. Consider maintenance of a
plasma ethanol level of 100 mg/dL to 150 mg/dL.

5. Fire Fighting Measures

Suitable Extinguishing Media:

Fine water spray, normal foam, dry agent (carbon dioxide, dry chemical powder).

Unsuitable Extinguishing Media:

8. Exposure Controls/Personal Protection

Ethylene glycol (vapour): 8hr TWA = 52 mg/m3 (20 ppm), 15 min STEL = 104 mg/m3 (40 ppm), Sk
Ethylene glycol (particulate): 8hr TWA = 10 mg/m3 , Sk

As published by Safe Work Australia Workplace Exposure Standards for Airborne Contaminants.

TWA - The time-weighted average airborne concentration of a particular substance when calculated
over an eight-hour working day, for a five-day working week.

STEL (Short Term Exposure Limit) - the airborne concentration of a particular substance calculated as
a time-weighted average over 15 minutes, which should not be exceeded at any time during a normal
eight hour work day. According to current knowledge this concentration should neither impair the
health of, nor cause undue discomfort to, nearly all workers.

`Sk' (skin) Notice - absorption through the skin may be a significant source of exposure. The exposure
standard is invalidated if such contact should occur.

These Workplace Exposure Standards are guides to be used in the control of occupational health
hazards. All atmospheric contamination should be kept to as low a level as is workable.
These workplace exposure standards should not be used as fine dividing lines between safe and
dangerous concentrations of chemicals. They are not a measure of relative toxicity.

MONOETHYLENE GLYCOL SAFETY DATA SHEET
Appropriate engineering controls:
Ensure ventilation is adequate and that air concentrations of components are controlled below quoted
Workplace Exposure Standards. Vapour heavier than air - prevent concentration in hollows or sumps.
DO NOT enter confined spaces where vapour may have collected. Keep containers closed when not
in use.

If in the handling and application of this material, safe exposure levels could be exceeded, the use of
engineering controls such as local exhaust ventilation must be considered and the results
documented. If achieving safe exposure levels does not require engineering controls, then a detailed
and documented risk assessment using the relevant Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) (refer to
PPE section below) as a basis must be carried out to determine the minimum PPE requirements.

Individual protection measures, such as Personal Protective Equipment (PPE):

The selection of PPE is dependent on a detailed risk assessment. The risk assessment should
consider the work situation, the physical form of the chemical, the handling methods, and
environmental factors.

OVERALLS, SAFETY SHOES, SAFETY GLASSES, GLOVES, RESPIRATOR.

Wear overalls, safety glasses and impervious gloves. Use with adequate ventilation. If determined by
a risk assessment an inhalation risk exists, wear an organic vapour respirator meeting the
requirements of AS/NZS 1715 and AS/NZS 1716. Always wash hands before smoking, eating,
drinking or using the toilet. Wash contaminated clothing and other protective equipment before
storage or re-use.

cylinders contain less than 165 pounds of product.) If leaking or spilled product catches fire, do
not extinguish flames. Flammable and toxic vapors may spread from leak and could explode if
reignited. Vapors can be ignited by pilot lights, other flames, smoking, sparks, heaters,
electrical equipment, static discharge, or other ignition sources at locations distant from product
handling point. Explosive atmospheres may linger. Before entering area, especially confined
areas, check atmosphere with an appropriate device. Reverse flow into cylinder may cause
rupture. To protect persons from cylinder fragments and toxic fumes if a rupture occurs, totally
evacuate the area if the fire cannot be brought under immediate control.

SECTION 6: Accidental release measures

6.1. Personal precautions, protective equipment and emergency procedures
General measures : Evacuate personnel to a safe area. Appropriate self-contained breathing apparatus may be
required. Approach suspected leak area with caution. Remove all sources of ignition. if safe
to do so. Reverse flow into cylinder may cause rupture. Reduce gas with fog or fine water
spray. Stop flow of product if safe to do so. Ventilate area or move container to a well-
ventilated area. Flammable gas may spread from leak. Before entering the area, especially a
confined area, check the atmosphere with an appropriate device.

SECTION 7: Handling and storage

7.1. Precautions for safe handling
Precautions for safe handling : Do not breathe gas/vapor. Avoid all contact with skin, eyes, or clothing. Emergency eye wash
fountains and safety showers should be available in the immediate vicinity of any potential
exposure.

Keep away from heat, hot surfaces, sparks, open flames and other ignition sources. No
smoking. Use only non-sparking tools. Use only explosion-proof equipment.

Wear leather safety gloves and safety shoes when handling cylinders. Protect cylinders from
physical damage; do not drag, roll, slide or drop. While moving cylinder, always keep in place
removable valve cover. Never attempt to lift a cylinder by its cap; the cap is intended solely to
protect the valve. When moving cylinders, even for short distances, use a cart (trolley, hand
truck, etc.) designed to transport cylinders. Never insert an object (e.g., wrench, screwdriver,
pry bar) into cap openings; doing so may damage the valve and cause a leak. Use an
adjustable strap wrench to remove over-tight or rusted caps. Slowly open the valve. If the
valve is hard to open, discontinue use and contact your supplier. Close the container valve
after each use; keep closed even when empty. Never apply flame or localized heat directly to
any part of the container. High temperatures may damage the container and could cause the
pressure relief device to fail prematurely, venting the container contents. For other precautions
in using this product, see section 16.

7.2. Conditions for safe storage, including any incompatibilities

Storage conditions : Store in a cool, well-ventilated place. Store and use with adequate ventilation. Store only
where temperature will not exceed 125°F (52°C). Firmly secure containers upright to keep
them from falling or being knocked over. Install valve protection cap, if provided, firmly in place
by hand. Store full and empty containers separately. Use a first-in, first-out inventory system
to prevent storing full containers for long periods.

OTHER PRECAUTIONS FOR HANDLING, STORAGE, AND USE: When handling product
under pressure, use piping and equipment adequately designed to withstand the pressures to
be encountered. Never work on a pressurized system. Use a back flow preventive device in
the piping. Gases can cause rapid suffocation because of oxygen deficiency; store and use
with adequate ventilation. If a leak occurs, close the container valve and blow down the system
in a safe and environmentally correct manner in compliance with all international,
federal/national, state/provincial, and local laws; then repair the leak. Never place a container
where it may become part of an electrical circuit.
7.3. Specific end use(s)
None.
