Cube of a Number : For a given number y, we define cube of y = y x y x y denoted by y3

e.g. 23= 2x2x2 =8 Thus cube of 2 is 8

Perfect Cube : A natural nuber is said to be a perfect cube it it is the cube of some natural number.
For e.g. - 13= 1, 23=8, 33= 27, 43= 64 etc
Thus - 8, 27, 64 etc are perfect cubes
Test : A given natural number is a perfect cube if it can be expressed as the products of triplets of euqal
factors.
Cubes of Negative Integers : The cube of a negeative integer is always negetaive.
Properties of Cubs of Numbers :
(i) The cube of every even number is even.
(ii) The cube of every odd number is odd.
CUBE ROOTS
Cube Root : The cube root of a number is that number whose cube gives x. We denote the cube root of x
by 3 x .
for eg.is 2x2x2 =8  3 8 =2

COMPOUND INTEREST 5

Interest : Interest is the extra Money paid by institutions like banks or post offices on Money deposited (kept)
with them. Interest is also paid by people when they borrow Money.
Compound Interest : After a certain specified period the difference between the amount and the Money
borrowed is called the Compound interest.
CI= A-P
Calculating compound interest by using formula
R n
Case 1 - When the interest is compounded annually then A= P(1+ )
100
where P = principal, R% rate and time =n years per annum

Case2 - When the interest is compounded but rates are different for different years

Let principal = P. time = 2 years, and let ther rates of interest be p% p.a. during the first year and q% p.a.
during the second year.
p q
Then amount after 2 years 2 { px (1+ ) x(1+ )}
100 100
(This formula may similarly be extended for any number of years)

Case 3 - When interest is compounded annually but time is a fraction

3
3 R 2
For e.g. suppose time is 2 years. Then amount = p x( 1+ ) x (1+5 x R )
5 100
100
Applications of Compound interest formula
In each of the following situations we use the CI formula :
(i) Increase ( or decrease) in population
(ii) The growth of bacteria when the rate of growth is known
(iii) Depreciation in the values of machines, etc at a given rate.
Note : For decrease (or depreciated value), we use the formula :
R n
Decreased value (or depreciated value) = p(1- )
100
Interest compound Half -yearly

Let principal = p, rate R% per annum , time =n year suppose that the intetest is compounded half-yearly.
R R
Then, rate = ( )% per half -year, time =(2n) half years, and amount = px (1+ )2n
2 2x100
Compound interest = amount - principal

Interest compounded quarterly

4
Let principal = p, rate = R% per annum, time = n years suppose that the interest is compounded quarterly
R R
Then rate =( )% per quarter , time =(4n) quarters, and amount p x (1+ ) 4n
4 4x100
Compound interest =(amount) -(principal)
Exercise - 11A

1. Find the compound interest on 2500 for 2 years at 10% per annum compounded annually.
Solution :
Given Principal = 2500, Time = 2 years, Rate = 10%
Interest for the first year
2500 x 10x1
=
100
= 500
Amount at the end of the first year
= 2500 +250 = 2750
Interest for the Second year
2750 x 10 x 1
= = 275
100
Amount at the end of the second year
= (2750 +275) = 3025
So, Compound Interest = 3025 - 2500 = 525

6. Manoj deposited a sum of 64000 in a post office for 3 years, compounded annually at 7 %
2
per annum. What amount will he get on maturity?
Solution :
1 15
Given Principal = 64000, Time = 3 years, Rate = 7 2 % = 2 %
Interest for the first year
64000 x 15 x 1
= 100 x 2
= 4800
Amount at the end of the first year
= 64000 +4800 = 68800
Interest for the Second year
68800 x 15 x 1
= = 5160
100 x 2
Amount at the end of the second year
= 68800 +5160
= 73960
Interest for the third year
73960 x 15 x 1
= 100 x 2 = 5547

Amount at the end of the third year

5
