LESSON 2C: THE GOOD LIFE

Consider the following questions
1. What is the good life?
The good life is often described as a state of happiness, contentment, and
fulfillment, where individuals feel a sense of purpose, satisfaction, and well-being
in their lives.
For some, the good life may be achieved through material success and financial
stability, while for others, it may be attained through spiritual growth, personal
relationships, or social and political activism. Ultimately, the good life is a
personal and individual ideal that varies from person to person, and it is up to
each of us to define what it means to us and to pursue it in our own way.

2. What is the relationship between the good life and science?

Science can contribute to the good life by providing knowledge and
technologies that improve our health, well-being, and understanding of the world.
However, there are also potential risks and ethical concerns associated with
scientific advancements that can undermine the good life. It is important to
consider these implications to ensure that science supports, rather than
undermines, the good life.

3. Does technology always lead us to the good life? how and why?
No, technology does not always lead us to the good life. While it can provide
benefits, it can also create new problems and challenges that threaten our well-
being and the environment. The impact of technology depends on how we
develop and use it, and we must consider ethical and social implications to
ensure it supports human flourishing.
LESSON 2D: WHEN TECHNOLOGY AND HUMANITY CROSS
Consider the following questions
1. Is technology really necessary in people’s lives? Is it completely necessary?
The necessity of technology in people's lives is debated. While it brings
benefits and conveniences, it can also have negative impacts, such as addiction,
distraction, and environmental degradation. Its necessity depends on individual
perspectives and values, and it must be used responsibly and ethically to ensure
it supports human flourishing.

2. How do you balance technology’s need with the dilemmas it faces?

Balancing technology's needs with its dilemmas involves considering ethical
and social implications in design and development, establishing regulations and
standards, and collaborating among stakeholders to mitigate risks and promote
responsible use.

3. Would there be a technology ethics code?

Yes, there are already technology ethics codes and guidelines in existence,
developed by various organizations to provide guidance for responsible and
ethical use of technology. These codes reflect a growing recognition of the need
to ensure that technology is developed and used in a way that promotes human
flourishing and addresses potential risks and harms.

EXERCISE

1. Philosophical Dialogue: Exploring Ethical Dilemmas of Technological

Advances in Society

Subject: The Ethical Dilemmas of Modern Devices

Moderators: The moderators will provide an introduction to the topic and

facilitate the discussion, ensuring that each group has equal opportunity to
present their arguments.

Supportive Group: The supportive group will argue that modern devices bring
more benefits than harm to users. They will present evidence of how devices
have improved communication, education, and healthcare, and how they
have enabled greater convenience and efficiency in people's lives.

Opposing Group: The opposing group will argue that modern devices
endanger users more than they benefit them. They will present evidence of
how devices contribute to addiction, distraction, and mental health issues,
and how they pose privacy and security risks to users.
Discussion Questions:
1. What are the main benefits and dangers of modern devices?
2. How do these benefits and dangers affect different groups of people, such
as children, the elderly, and marginalized communities?
3. What ethical principles should guide the development and use of modern
devices, and how can these principles be upheld?
4. Is it possible to strike a balance between the benefits and dangers of
modern devices, and how can this be achieved?

Conclusion: The moderators will summarize the key arguments and insights
from the discussion and encourage participants to continue reflecting on the
ethical dilemmas of technological advances in society.

2. Filipinos' Addiction to Various Technology - This group will demonstrate the

prevalence and consequences of technology addiction among Filipinos,
showcasing how devices and platforms such as smartphones, social media,
and gaming have become pervasive and addictive, but also caused issues
such as cyberbullying, sleep deprivation, and social disconnection.

Skit Format:
Each group will perform a skit that showcases their chosen technological
issue, using role-playing, dialogue, and visual aids to demonstrate the
benefits, challenges, and consequences of their topic. They will also highlight
the role that technology has played in people's lives and how it has influenced
their behavior, attitudes, and values. The skits should be creative, engaging,
and thought-provoking, and should aim to convey a message or lesson to the
audience.

Conclusion:
After each group has performed their skit, the class will engage in a brief
discussion about the different technological issues and their implications. The
class will reflect on the benefits and challenges of technology in society and
consider how to balance technological innovation with ethical and social
concerns.

LESSON 3A: THE INFORMATION AGE

Consider the following questions
1. Who are the people who have contributed to the information age’s technical
advancements?
There are many people who have contributed to the technical advancements of
the information age, and it is difficult to name them all. Some of the most
influential figures include computer scientists such as Alan Turing, John von
Neumann, and Grace Hopper, who developed the theoretical foundations and
programming languages that enabled modern computing. Other pioneers include
inventors such as Tim Berners-Lee, who created the World Wide Web, and Bill
Gates and Steve Jobs, who popularized personal computing and revolutionized
the software and hardware industries. Additionally, many engineers, designers,
entrepreneurs, and researchers have made significant contributions to fields
such as telecommunications, data storage, artificial intelligence, and robotics,
among others, shaping the digital landscape and driving innovation forward.

2. What other aspects of culture are being affected by he information age, apart
from communication?
The information age has impacted many aspects of culture beyond
communication, including media and entertainment, education, business, and
politics. It has transformed the way people consume media and entertainment,
provided access to education from anywhere in the world, enabled new forms of
commerce and data analysis, and played an increasingly important role in
political discourse and election campaigns.

3. What other scientific breakthroughs would be made in the future?

Although it's impossible to predict the future with certainty, there are several
areas where significant scientific breakthroughs may occur in the coming years.
These include artificial intelligence and machine learning, gene editing and
synthetic biology, quantum computing, renewable energy, and space exploration.
LESSON 3B: BIODIVERSITY AND THE HEALTHY SOCIETY
Consider the following questions
1. How can you balance the growing needs of humans in terms of wellbeing with
the need to preserve biodiversity’s growth?
To balance human needs and the need to preserve biodiversity, it's important
to manage natural resources sustainably, prioritize conservation efforts,
collaborate with stakeholders, and educate the public. Achieving this balance
requires a multi-faceted approach that considers the complex relationships
between humans and the environment.

2. Can you believe the planet will continue to exist without human intervention? Or
does biodiversity necessitate the intervention of humans to continue to grow?
The planet and its biodiversity can continue to exist without human intervention,
but human activities have significantly impacted biodiversity, and in some cases,
human intervention may be necessary to protect and restore it. However, it is
important for humans to recognize and respect the intrinsic value of nature and
work to reduce our negative impact on the environment.

3. What are some little aspects that you believe will help to save our biodiversity?
What do you believe the most popular human behaviors are that threaten
biodiversity? What would be the ramifications if these human actions were to be
halted and outlawed?
To save biodiversity, little actions such as planting native plants, supporting
sustainable practices, reducing plastic use, and minimizing carbon footprint can
help. Human actions such as habitat destruction, pollution, overfishing, and
climate change threaten biodiversity. Halting and outlawing these actions could
have positive ramifications for biodiversity, including the establishment of
protected areas, habitat restoration, and species reintroduction. However, there
may be economic and social implications to consider, and it is important to
involve all stakeholders in the decision-making process.
LESSON 3C: GENETICALLY MODIFIED ORGANISMS: SCIENCE, HEALTH, AND
POLITICS
Consider the following questions:
1. How can you balance the benefits and risks of genetically modified organisms for
humans?
Balancing the benefits and risks of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) for
humans requires careful consideration. GMOs have the potential to improve crop
yields, increase resistance to pests and diseases, and enhance nutritional value,
but there are concerns about the potential long-term effects on human health and
the environment. To balance these benefits and risks, rigorous scientific research
should be conducted, clear labeling and regulation should be implemented, and
transparency and accountability should be prioritized. It is important to take into
account the diverse perspectives and interests of all stakeholders, including
scientists, farmers, consumers, and environmental advocates.

2. When do you think GMO studies should come to an end?

GMO studies should come to an end depends on the scientific evidence and
regulatory decisions. If GMOs were to be found to cause more harm than good,
regulatory bodies may decide to end or restrict their use.

3. Is genetic modification a purely experimental experiment or is it a human attempt

to imitate God?
Genetic modification is when scientists change the way an organism's genetic
material works, so that it can have specific traits that they want. It's kind of like
when you change the recipe for your favorite cookie to make it taste even better!
Scientists do this to try and solve problems like hunger or diseases. Some people
think that it's like playing God or trying to change nature too much, but others
think that it's a good way to help people.
