Question one
BA1 which is a solution containing 4.0gl-1 of sodium hydroxide, BA2 which is a solution of
sulphuric acid with unknown concentration. Use BA2 to standardize it and used it to determine
the percentage purity and impurity of BA3 which is a solution containing 9.8g per litre of sodium
carbonate. You are required to determine the concentration of the aid and the percentage purity
and impurity of sodium carbonate in BA3
Procedure;
Pipette 25 cm3 or 20cm3 of BA1 into a clean conical flask. Then add 2-3 drops of
phenolphthalein indicator and titrate with solution BA2 from the burette until the end point.
Repeat the titration 2-3 times until you obtain consistent results. Enter your results in the table
below.

Questions:
a) Calculate the;
b) Calculate:
i. The number of moles of BA2 that reacted with the sodium carbonate.
Question two
You will require to determine the percentage of sodium hydroxide in the 𝐹𝐴1 mixture (𝑁𝑎 =
23, 𝐶 = 12, 𝑂 = 16, 𝐻 = 1)
Procedure I
i) By use of a measuring cylinder, measure and transfer 100𝑐𝑚3 of 𝐹𝐴1 into a 250 𝑐𝑚3
volumetric flask and make up to the mark with distilled water. Label the resultant
solution 𝐹𝐴3 .
ii) Pipette 25 or 20 𝑐𝑚3 of 𝐹𝐴3 into a clean conical flask. Add 2-3 drops of
phenolphthalein indictor and titrate with 𝐹𝐴2 from the burette until the end of point is
reached.
Repeat the titration until you obtain consistent results.
