a. Discuss the main advantages of optical fibres for transmission systems. (12 Marks)

b. With proper analysis, criticize the use of hexagon as cell shape in cellular networks in comparison
to Square and triangular cell shape. (13 Marks)

2.

a. Design a telephony subscriber loop for user 9 km away from the exchange with the following
parameters: (25 Marks)

• Total cable loss= 7dB.


• Telephone device resistance= 250 Ω,
• Miscellaneous resistance= 50 Ω, and
• Switching equipment resistance = 575 Ω

3. Global System for Mobile communication (GSM) uses the band of 935 MHz -960 MHz for downlink
with 8 channels of 200 KHz. Obtain maximum number of users that could be served in one cell if
radius of cell R= 1Km and minimum distance between clusters’ centers is 4.5Km. (25 Marks)

4. Discuss the different multiple access techniques with examples. (25 Marks)

a. Discuss any two types of VoIP protocols. (12 Marks)

b. Determine the implementation complexity of 4096 space time space switch with 32 Time Division
Multiplexing (TDM) links and 128 channels. Assume that the value of k=7.
