Description of Software: Canva is a versatile tool that supports teachers and students alike in
creating engaging content for the classroom. It is a user-friendly design with a variety of templates,
graphics, and tools for creating images, videos, or podcasts. The platform offers a wide selection of
visually appealing templates that you can easily search and customize based on your needs. With
intuitive tools, Canva ensures that your images or podcasts are well put together and professional.
When creating a podcast on Canva, they give you the option to upload your recording or record it on
the Canva website itself. You can upload background music and even put your script to read from in
the notes tab while recording. This tool is an excellent and accessible resource for integrating
creativity into teaching while also engaging your students through the usage of this site.
Bloom’s Taxonomy Level(s): (Which level(s) will this lesson meet using this technology tool?)
Please put an X in the box or next to the level(s). Do not highlight or bold the response.
How do you plan to implement this lesson and integrate the technology? Check all that apply:
☐ Teacher-led: There is no student voice and choice in the activities. Students are guided by the
teacher's direction and expectations. Learning activities are assigned to the student and mostly
practice based.
☒ Student-Led: Students are given voice and choice in the activities. They may select the topic of
learning and/or determine the tool they will use to meet the learning goal. The teacher facilitates
the learning as the students direct their own learning processes.
☐ Problem-based and/or Publishable: Students are solving problems and completing projects to
demonstrate their learning. Additionally, the projects can be shared outside of the classroom.
(Note: This objective could be reached by displaying the project on the school’s morning newscast,
posting the project to the classroom blog, presenting it to another class, or publishing it via an
outside source.)
Lesson idea implementation:
To introduce the lesson, I will begin by introducing the topic of asking who, what, where, when, why,
and how questions and their importance when reading or listening to a story. I will make a potential
connection to students' lives where I will ask them to reflect on a special memory in their lives and
discuss questions such as who was there, what happened, when it happened, why it was important,

and how it was special. We will then read a book together, “If You Give a Mouse a Cookie,” I will
pause periodically throughout the book to have class discussions on the 5 w’s and how. I will write
down their responses on poster paper to allow them to have a visual and a reminder of how they
demonstrated 5 w’s and how for their next assignment. They will be able to reference this paper
throughout their next assignment. After our discussion, I will introduce the podcast activity where
students will work in pairs to complete this activity. I will explain that they will use Canva to create a
podcast discussing key details from a book from our class library. I will provide a tutorial on how to
use Canva for a podcast through a pre-made video which students will be able to access and watch
again through a QR code. This ensures students understand how to create a creative podcast image
and add their recording to it. I will pass out an outline for their podcast, students must create an
outline of what they will say in their script and how they will address each W and the how.
Additionally, they will address key points and details of the story in this outline.
I will remind students of the learning goal: to create a podcast where they discuss the who, what,
where, when, why, and how of the book. They should be able to explain their reasoning on why they
chose those questions to ask and explain key points from the story of their choice. I will emphasize
the "ask 3, then me" rule. This rule encourages students to ask one another before seeking
assistance from the educator. Throughout the lesson, I will be monitoring the room to provide
guidance and feedback as needed to support their understanding. To conclude, each pair will
present their podcasts to the class by summarizing the book they read together, the 5 w’s and the
how they came up with and explaining key details from the story.
In this lesson, I touch on the various principles of UDL. Specifically, I focus on incorporating the
multiple means of representation principle in UDL. I accomplish this through Canva which allows
students to visually demonstrate their learning in a variety of ways such as images, video, text, or
audio. This caters to various student learning styles in the classroom. Students are to create a visual
for their podcast and record their discussion of the book where they will talk about the 5 w’s and the
how alongside the key parts of the story. This supports the representation portion of UDL which
allows students to comprehend information in the various provided ways.

Additionally, this tool also incorporates the engagement portion of UDL. This is accomplished
through offering a creative, engaging, and interactive way for students to create their podcast
images creatively and record their voices. This tool and activity encourages participation and
increases engagement as students collaborate with their partners to reflect upon their learning.
Canva promotes engagement with its various interactive tools to help students choose from their
many images, and templates, and their choice of how they would like to demonstrate their learning.
Reflection: For this lesson, I believe that Canva, my audio tool, will allow students to engage with
the lesson actively while also incorporating collaboration and deepening their understanding of the
5 w’s and the how. This tool provides a creative way to get students excited about what they are
learning, and I believe that is important in a classroom. I think students will enjoy this lesson as it
allows them to fully interact and take the lead in their learning process. It allows them to be creative
and work together to accomplish their vision of the podcast which overall benefits their learning. I
am looking forward to seeing what my students will create as their podcast images and their
discussions in the podcasts of their chosen books.
