e-Sewa
Chapter 1: Introduction
e-Sewa is a mobile money account. It is a digital wallet from where customers can pay, send and
receive money from their mobile phone and internet, instantly.
It is in operation since 2009 and has recently been licensed by Nepal Rastra Bank as Payment
Service Provider.
Customers can register and get mobile money account instantly, cash-in to their wallet from
Agents and partner banks and start making payments. Customers can pay for utilities, recharge
their mobile, pay internet bills, EMI, buy airlines ticket, school fees, credit card bills, etc. from
their mobile.
Similarly, merchants, service providers and retail outlets can receive payments for goods and
services in their wallet instantly.
Eventually, we realized the need of the payment gateway and developed a web and mobile based
application, ‘e-Sewa’.
The fast growing internet technology not only provides entertainment but also provides various
services. In a country like Nepal, where all you find is a long queue standing to pay their bills,
wherever and whenever you go. It is not only boring to wait for so long but is also time
consuming and a total waste of time. But still you have to wait on those long ever ending lines
because you don’t have any options.e-sewa Nepal is the solution for your trouble. Launched by
F1 soft international, e-Sewa is ‘Nepal’s first online payment gateway. Established with an aim
to payment through internet. E-sewa was hacked on oct8,2020. The data breach seems to be first
posted on twitter at exactly 9:12pm. Under the twitter handler @Aparich 95406002. A hacker
releases nearly two dozen esewa users details including passwords.
Established with an aim to help and support e-commerce business, esewa allows payments and
money transfers through internet and serves as an electronic alternative to the traditional
complicated paper methods such as cheques and money orders.It’ s main objectives is to create
cashless economy.
1.3 Limitations
1. Since data are collected from secondary sources it may not be reliable and authentic.

Chapter 2:
Esewa is an online payment gateway with hosted wallet as Nepal’s first online payment gateway
in order to foster the e commerce and also to bring the financial services to the unbanked sector
as well.
Currently, there are 21 major banks and financial institutions of Nepal in e sewa Network, a
customer base of 1,20,000 and more than 800 Merchant partners. It can be basically accessed by

two modes: Web and mobile, esewa mobile application is a sms based application for mobile
devices.

2.4 Major Components of eSewa
a. Customer
People from all age group, from a small kid to an old woman, as they shop are all feasible
customers of esewa. But it requires you to identify you yourself to make any payments, so we do
assume to target out customers to be at least young enough to understand the payment system
and its flow.

b. Merchants
Merchants are another major component of esewa as it their goods and services that are up for
sale. They have the key role to perform and esewa efforts them to enlist their participation in the
system. Any business that is physically or virtually operating is eligible to become Merchant in
esewa, if it falls under the rule and regulation of the government of Nepal and agrees to receive
payment online.

c. Partner Banks
Partner banks play the major role in esewa as they are behind the scene to hold the actual
transaction of any payment process. eSewa is just virtual representation of the transaction that
actually occurs amongst the settlement bank and the partner banks. As a bank cannot acquire all
the merchants nor it can entertain all its customers to pay all the merchants, esewa provides a
common platform to share the merchants and customer payments in Nepal

A consumer having esewa account can have online fund transfer from one bank account to
another account without disclosing consumer account name and number. Consumer use esewa to
from a private session using SSL protocol. Here, private and confidential information are
encrypted securely before transmission of information among business partners. The users can
use their mobile or internet services to use the services both online and offline.
4.1 Conclusion

eSewa is a digital payment portal that allow to make online and offline payment. eSewa involves
two business models i.e. B2B and B2C .eSewa is a safer and easier way to pay. eSewa uses SSL
technology to keep information safe. It encrypts private and confidential information securely
before transmission and users a secure VPN connection while doing transaction with partner
banks accounts. eSewa is the major contributor to Nepal’s E-commerce. Over 300,000 users are
there of eSewa of which 70 per cent are active. Of this every day 50000 unique users make
around 25,000 transactions worth 3.2 million rupees.
4.2 Recommendation
Even thoughteSewa is a safe and secured means of e-payment in Nepal there are some aspects
that we would like to recommend for improvement in eSewa services. Following are the areas of
improvements;
Frequently update security mechanism to maintain trust worthy online transactions
Simplify the user access system for less educated people
Arrange back up servers to counter power out problem
Allow 24/7 customer services from anywhere within Nepal
Arrange payment gateway facilities beyond the territory of Nepal.
