Pre-Lab Task

Problem 1: Watch this video

Explain the effect temperature has on the time taken for the food coloring to distribute evenly.

Problem 2:

Ricky is designing an experiment to measure the change in thermal energy of a 50 gram sample
of water when a mass of copper is added to it and thermal equilibrium is reached. The water’s
initial temperature is 22oC, and the copper mass will start at 200oC before being added to the
water.

He organizes his experimental procedure below. What should be his final step(s)? Be specific.

1. Pour 50 g of water into a thermally insulated container.

2. Measure the water’s temperature to ensure it is 22oC.
3. Heat the copper mass to 200oC using a hot plate.
4. Using forceps, add the copper mass to the 50 g of water in the insulated container.
5. Close the lid on the insulated container.
6. …..
Problem 3:

What is the specific heat capacity of silicon if it takes 192J to raise the temperature of 45.0g of
silicon from 20.0oC to 26.0oC?

Problem 4:

In an extremely well-insulated container 1.6 kg of water at 25oC is mixed with an unknown mass
of water at 99oC. The final temperature of the water mixture is 47oC. What was the unknown
mass of water at 99oC initially?

Problem 5:

A student performing a thermal energy lab starts with samples of two materials: an unknown
metal and vegetable oil. The metal is heated, and then dropped into the oil.

The observations from the lab are recorded below:

Substance Specific heat capacity in Mass (g) Change in Change in energy
J/goC) temperature (oC) (J)

Metal 0.65 20.0 -8.0

Oil 1.67 50.0 +0.9

a) Calculate the change in energies for the metal and oil - complete the table.
b) Are the changes in energy of the substances as you would expect?

c) List some possible reasons for this discrepancy.

Problem 6: [challenging!]

1.6 kg of water at 26oC is mixed in a well-insulated container with 2.5 kg of olive oil at 143oC
(SHC of oil = 2800 J/kgoC). Will the water boil? If YES or NO, what will be the final temperature
of the mixture?

*Note: the water will boil if the mixture reaches 100oC or greater.

Specific heat capacity of water:

4200 J/kgoC OR 4.2 J/goC

Energy change = mass • SHC • temp.change

Q = mcΔT

Where ΔT = Tf - Ti
