Single Elimination
DEFINITION OF SINGLE
ELIMATION ROUND SINGLE ELIMATION ROUND
A single-elimination tournament, also known as a
knockout or sudden death tournament, is a type
of competition where participants are eliminated
after a single loss. Each match's winner advances
to the next round, while the loser is immediately
out of the competition. This process continues
until only one participant remains and is declared
the champion. This format is straightforward,
easy to organize, and often used in sports and
other competitive events due to its simplicity
and clear path to determining a winner.

DEFINITION OF SINGLE
SINGLE ELIMATION ROUND
ELIMATION ROUND Single Elimination is a type of elimination
which determines the winner by eliminating
the loser in every match until there is one
left.

The easiest and fastest way to declare a

winner.

We can use Single Elimination when:

- the number of entries is large
- the time is short
- the number of playing venue is limited

STRUCTURE AND
MECHANICS
. 1. Initial Round: All participants are paired off to compete.
The number of participants is usually a power of two (e.g., 8,
16, 32) to ensure a balanced bracket. If the number of
participants isn't a power of two, some may receive a bye in
the first round.

2. Advancement: Winners from each match move to the next

round, while losers are eliminated. This continues through
successive rounds (quarterfinals, semifinals, etc.).

3. Final Round: The last remaining competitors face off in the

final match to determine the overall winner.

ADVANTAGES DISADVANTAGES
•Simplicity: Easy to understand •Harsh on Losers: One loss
and organize. means elimination, which might
not reflect overall skill levels
•Time-Efficient: Fewer matches
compared to other formats, like •Potential for Uneven Matchups:
round-robin. Early rounds might see top
competitors eliminated before
•Excitement: High stakes in each they face each other.
match create a thrilling
atmosphere.

FORMULA
Formula for the No. of Groups
• G= N-1
G - stands for the number of games
N - stands for the no. of entries or teams
1 - is constant

Formula for getting the No. of Bye

• Bye= P² - N
- Where P is the least power of 2 higher than N with a fix
value of 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64 and so on.

POSITIONING THE BYE
There is a certain layout to the brackets, you can’t just place
byes in the place of your choices. This is all revolves around
the seeding.

Seeding-in sports is a preliminary ranking that can be used in

arranging a sports tournament. It is called a seed because of
the analogy with plants where the seed might grow into a top
rank at the end of that tournament, or might either way.
Players/teams are ‘planted’ into the bracket in a manner that
is typically intended so that the best don’t meet until later in
the competition.

Awarding of the byes are always based on the seedings of the

last season of the tournament. It is usually given to the
team/s who were at the top rank on the seedings in the
previous season of the tournament.
POSITIONING THE BYE
For example, we have 6 teams for the last tournament:

In the 2019 Tournament, Philippines got the 1st place, USA

the 2nd and the 3rd place is China. We can now identify who
will be the teams that be given or awarded as the byes for
2020 Tournament.

POSITIONING THE BYE
The number of teams are not in the power of 2s.. Therefore,
we need to get the lowest power of 2 that is higher than 6.

We have 2 byes. That means team Philippines and USA will

be our byes for the 2020 tournament.

BYE
As you can see, the teams are assigned
alternate up and down based on their
previous tournament ranking

 The byes are positioned in the both end of

the bracket so the result of the tournament
would be equal.

 In positioning the other teams, the up and

down process are usually made according to
the ranking of the teams in the last
tournament or the what we called “seeding.”
4 TEAMS SINGLE ELIMINATION
Letter G stands for the word “game” and
the number beside it stands for the what
number of games it is. While the W stands
for “winner” and the number beside stand
for what number of the games does the
winner won.

We have 4 teams in this example. First, we

need to find the number of games before
proceeding into bracketing.
G = N -1
G = 4 – 1 G = 3 GAMES
6 TEAMS SINGLE ELIMINATION
Games Schedule:
G1 = B vs C
G2 = D vs E
G3 = A vs W1
G4 = F vs W2
G5 = W3 vs W4

Team A and F are advance to the next round

that’s why the G1 and G2 W2 are B vs C and
D vs E.
8 TEAMS SINGLE ELIMINATION
In an 8 team single elimination tournament, the
teams compete in a bracket where each match is a
knockout game. The winner of each game moves on
to the next round and the loser is eliminated. The
tournament continues until there is only one team
remaining. That team is declared the overall winner.

The 8 team single elimination bracket is made up of

3 different rounds. All 8 teams will play in the first
round and no teams will receive byes. When a
Number of Games: In a single elimination
bracket does not have exactly 2, 4, 8, 16, 32 ,64, or
tournament, the number of games will always be 1
128 teams, then there must be byes. Byes are less than the number of teams. So, an 8 team single
awarded in the first round and only the first round. elimination tournament will have a total of 7 games.
10 TEAMS SINGLE ELIMINATION
In a 10 team single elimination tournament, the
teams compete in a bracket where each match is a
knockout game. The winner of each game moves on
to the next round and the loser is eliminated. The
tournament continues until there is only one team
remaining. That team is declared the overall winner.

The 10 team single elimination bracket is made up

of 4 different rounds. Four teams will play in the
first round and 6 teams will receive byes. When a
Number of Games: In a single elimination
bracket does not have exactly 2, 4, 8, 16, 32 ,64, or
tournament, the number of games will always be 1
128 teams, then there must be byes. Byes are less than the number of teams. So, a 10 team single
awarded in the first round and only the first round. elimination tournament will have a total of 9
games..
12 TEAMS SINGLE ELIMINATION
In a 12 team single elimination tournament, the
teams compete in a bracket where each match is a
knockout game. The winner of each game moves on
to the next round and the loser is eliminated. The
tournament continues until there is only one team
remaining. That team is declared the overall winner

The 12 team single elimination bracket is made up

of 4 different rounds. Eight teams will play in the
first round and 4 teams will receive byes. When a
Number of Games: In a single elimination
bracket does not have exactly 2, 4, 8, 16, 32 ,64, or
tournament, the number of games will always be 1
128 teams, then there must be byes. Byes are less than the number of teams. So, a 12 team single
awarded in the first round and only the first round. elimination tournament will have a total of 11
