Introduction:
Cement is the major construction material in worldwide.
It is ready availability, cost effectiveness, wide ranging of performance and suitable for all
constructions. It gives good durability and strength.
Production of Cement is increasing due to the increasing demand from the construction
industries.

What’s wrong with cement ?

During Cement production releases high amounts of CO2 to the atmosphere. (1 tonne of
cement production release 1 tonne of CO2) thus contributing to 7% of world CO2 emission.
Cement production is highly energy intensive
Large amount of fly ash are generated from thermal coal-fired power plant and small
amount is used for various purpose .
How to reduce usage of cement ?
❖ Partially replace the use of cement in Bricks/ Block/concrete.
Example:
Blended cements, High volume fly ash.

❖ Develop alternate materials like

GEOPOLYMER BLOCK / CONCRETE
Example:
Fly Ash, GGBFS
GEOPOLYMER
A geopolymer is a solid aluminosilicate material usually formed by alkali
hydroxide or alkali silicate activation of a solid precursor such as coal fly ash,
calcined clay and/or metallurgical slag.
Hardened cementitious paste made from Fly ash, GGBS and Alkaline Solution.
The Geopolymer has all the properties same as ordinary Portland cement and can
be used as the replacement material for OPC. Combines waste products into
useful products. Geopolymer block is a high strength and lightweight inorganic
polymer that can be used in place of normal/regular block.
Prestressed Concrete Beams
Prestressed concrete is a system devised to provide sufficient precompression
in the concrete beam by tensioned steel wires, cables, or rods that under
working conditions the concrete has no tensile stresses or the tensile stresses
are so low that no visible cracking occurs.
Prestressed concrete is basically concrete in which internal stresses of a
suitable magnitude and distribution are introduced so that the stresses resulting
from the external loads are counteracted to a desired degree.
OBJECTIVES
To Procure and characterize the material required to make
Geopolymer concrete units like fly ash, GGBS, silica fume,
Metakaolin, clay and red soil.
To Analyze the setting characteristics of combinations of
different binders like (a) fly ash (b) GGBS (c) Metakaolin (d)
silica fume (e) iron ore tailings (f) red soil.
To Determine the strength development of the paste along
with microstructure in PSC.
To Investigate the properties of the geopolymer PSC beams in
flexural strength and comparative with traditional PSC beams
LITERATURE STUDY :
Flexural behavior of ultra-high performance geopolymer RC beams reinforced
with GFRP bars:
Taha A. El-Sayed,etal has used Geopolymer concrete (GPC) reinforced with glass fiber
reinforced polymer (GFRP) as materials in PSC and described the flexural behavior of the
geopolymer Ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC) beams. Also, the impact of UHPC
reinforced with glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) bars was studied.Four High
Strength Concrete (HSC) beams and another four in UHPC were reinforced using GFRP
with different ratios. The Results exhibited increasing the first crack load and ultimate load
carrying capacity. GPC beams showed a smaller deflection increase at the same ultimate
load. GPC beams reinforced with GFRP bars documented a higher crack width compared
with control. Using GFRP bars in reinforcement improved the concrete defection, the
patterns of cracks, cracks number of and the failure mode.
Development of ultra-light foamed insulation materials and interfacial bond
behavior with fiber-reinforced alkali-activated composites
Jianjun Zhao, etal study developed a new green external insulation system that integrates insulation
and formwork based on alkali activation technology. The preparation technology of ultra-light foam
insulation material (ULFIM) and the interface design method between ULFIM and fiber reinforced
alkali-activated composite material (FRAC) were proposed. The effects of rice husk ash (RHA) and
polyethylene (PE) fiber content on the dry density, thermal conductivity, compressive strength,
volumetric water absorption, and pore structure parameters of ULFIM were studied. The effects of
groove width, groove depth, groove spacing, and groove density on the interfacial bond behavior of
FRAC-ULFIM were discussed. The microstructure of ULFIM and the interface transition zone
morphology of FRAC-ULFIM and FRAC-extruded polystyrene (XPS) were observed using
scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and the mechanism of influencing factors on the
corresponding indicators were revealed. The results showed that adding an appropriate amount of
RHA and PE fiber had a significant positive effect on improving the performance of ULFIM.
