Melyn Cildu v2
Melyn Cildu v2
At just over a mile of mixed single and double bank river Irfon fishing, this beat lies in beautiful unspoilt rural
countryside offering complete privacy and seclusion. It has a good mixture of pools, fast runs, gutters and flats,
suiting a range of fly fishing techniques for the trout, grayling and late-season salmon.
From November 1st to the end of February, trotting maggots for grayling is permitted too. The grayling fishing in
this part of the Irfon is excellent, both in quality and quantity and the wild brown trout are usually of good
average size too. In addition to being a noted trout and grayling river, the Irfon also has runs of salmon late in
Description the season.
Wading is relatively easy along the majority of the beat in normal flows, with a gravel bed. There are a few more
tricky bedrock sections, however, where more care is needed. There are two parking area, both around a 200-
250 yard walk from the river. Please note that this beat is in an area where salmon and trout spawn in the
autumn and winter. We ask all anglers to ensure they do not disturb any spawning fish or step close to any
redds. When fishing from November to March it is advisable not to wade over knee depth but care must be
taken whenever wading at this time of year. Stepping into or even near a redd can result in significant egg
mortality.
The beat is approached from the main Llangammarch Wells / Llanwrtyd Wells road. From Builth Wells take the
A483 road, passing through Beulah and in Llanwrtyd
Wells, turn left by the chapel and Belle Vue Hotel. This road is known as Ffoss Road.
For the upper parking area, stay on the road for approx. 1 mile. On the right hand side you will see the railway
line comes close to the road. There is vehicular access by crossing the first paddock for a few yards to the other
side of the railway line (please exercise extreme caution – this line is used and unmanned) There is a right to
Directions & park 2 cars in the field adjoining the railway, either side of the gate. Parking is also available on the grass verge
Access as indicated on the map.
The field can sometimes be used for cattle and can damage to your vehicle. We recommend the use of the
roadside verge without blocking access for farm vehicles (parking in the paddock leading to the field is not
permitted).
For the lower parking, continue along Ffoss Road for another 1.1 miles (2.1 miles from turning off the A483),
turning down a track to the right signposted Abernant Melyn. After approximated 100 yards you will come
across a metal container, behind which is some hardstanding. Park here (without obstructing access to the
track) and walk down and across the railway, ensuring the 2 gates are closed behind you. Once on the other side
of the railway turn right through the gate and walk around the houses to the right (do not walk down the drive)
and through the field to the river.
No canoe access arrangements exist on the river Irfon. Should you encounter any canoeists please ask them not
