Q4. Define Computer and describe four advantages of it.
Ans. Computer: “It is an electronic device which accepts data as input, processes, stores
and retrieves it in an accurate way”.
Advantages:
1. Speed: Computers perform operations at a very high speed, e.g. if we instruct
the computer to multiply 3000 x 32000 then it will produce the result within
second.
2. Storage: A computer can store a very large amount of data in the about
thousands of books in a storage device.
3. Reliability: Computer is a reliable machine. It always gives correct output when
an error free data or command is given.
4. Accuracy: Computer is a machine which produces accurate results.

Q5. Define hardware and software.


Ans. Hardware: All physical parts of the computer that we can touch and see are known
as hardware, e.g. Monitor, Mouse, Keyboard etc.
Software: “Set of instructions that helps the computer to perform a specific task”,
E.g. MS Windows, Computer games etc.

Q7: Briefly explain the following.

(a) Scanner:
It is one of the input unit of Computer. It is used to feed pictures or images into
computer. It has following properties.
(i) It is capable of recognition of character and picture.
(ii) It uses laser beam.

(b) Hard Disk:


It is one of the storage devices. It is also called Winchester Disk or Fixed Disks. It
can store a huge amount of data as compared to all other storage devices. It is

attached with motherboard of computer system. It is more reliable storage device.

(c) Processor:
Central processing unit is called the brain of computer system. It supervises and
processes all operation of the computer system.

Q8. How does a computer work?


Answer: Following are the four basic operations used for working of a computer.
1. Input Operation: The process of receiving data from input devices of computer is called
input operation. Most Commonly used input devices are keyboard, mouse, scanner etc.
2. Processing Operation: The process of performing different operations on existing data
is called processing operation. e.g. when computer performs addition of two numbers it
is called processing.
3. Storage Operation: The process to store data/information in storage devices is called
storage operation. Storage devices include floppy disks, hard disk, CD/DVD, RAM and
Flash disk.
4. Output Operation: The process to display information on the screen (Monitor) or print
on paper is called output operation. The output obtained on monitor is called softcopy
and the output obtained on paper using printer is called hardcopy.

Q4. Define the following terms.
a. Title bar
b. Menu bar
c. Toolbar
d. Desktop
Ans. Title bar: An area at the top of a window that contains the name of the file or
application in the window.
Menu Bar: This is the strip below the Title Bar. The Menu bar has the program
functions organized in menus. For example, when we click on File, the different
operations that can be performed with files are displayed.
Toolbar: The Toolbar contains icons to immediately execute some of the most often
used commands. These commands can also be executed from the menu bar.
Desktop: After you have started the computer, the area you are looking at is called
the desktop.
Q5. Write down two lines about each of the following icons used in
Windows operating system.

My Computer My Documents Recycle Bin Internet Explorer

Ans. My Computer: This icon provides access to the resources on your computer. We can
access computer drives and other peripherals by clicking on My Computer.
My Documents: My Documents is the name of a special folder in the computer’s
desktop. It is commonly used to store a user’s documents, music, pictures, downloads
and other files.
Recycle Bin: When we delete a file or folder in Windows, Windows sends it to the
Recycle Bin. We can restore these files or folders that are located in the Recycle Bin
or we can delete them permanently.
Internet Explorer: Internet Explorer is used to quickly access Internet.

Q6. Write down steps for the following: -
 To restart Computer
 To open a program using desktop
 To Rename a folder.
Ans. a. Restart a Computer:
To restart a computer following steps are required:
 Click the Start button. The Start menu will appear.
 Click Turn Off Computer. The Turn Off Computer dialog box will appear.
 Click the Restart option. Your computer will be restarted.
b. To open a program using desktop:
To open a program using desktop, following steps are required.
 Double click on an icon on desktop. The program will be opened.
c. To Rename a folder:
To rename a folder, the following steps are required.
 Right click on the folder.
 Click on the Rename option.
 Now you can give another name to it.
 OR, Press F2 from keyboard to rename the folder.

 To rotate a picture in MS Paint
 To erase a freeform area in MS Paint
 Opening a file from CD
Ans. a. To rotate a picture in MS Paint:
 Insert your picture OR draw shape in MS Paint.
 Select the Picture using Rectangle Selection Tool.
 Click on the Image menu and then click on Flip / Rotate Option.
b. To erase a freeform area in MS Paint:
 In the toolbox, click Free-Form Select to select a freeform area.
 Select the area you want to erase.
 On the Edit menu, click Clear Selection.
c. Opening a file from CD:
Following steps are required to open a file from CD
 Double click on My Computer icon.
 Double click on CD icon. List of files will be displayed.
 Click on file you want to open.

b. Cut, Copy and Paste in MS Paint

Ans. a. Spray paint tool of MS Paint:
The Spray paint tool is used to spray a picture / shape with any colour.
b. Cut, Copy and Paste in MS Paint:

 Click on Paste Option. Open = Ctrl + O

c. Media player Controls

The large round button is used to play as well as to pause an audio or


video.

This button is used to stop the audio or video being played.

This button skips back to the previous audio or video on the list.

The button is used to play the next audio or video on playlist.

d. Status Bar: -
A status bar is a horizontal window at the bottom of a parent window in which
an application can display various kinds of status information.

Ans. Global data communication system: The Internet is a global data communication
system. It connects computers globally. Nowadays, the Internet is used in different
areas of real life like schools, offices, homes, shops etc.

Q5. Name different methods of connecting with internet.


Ans. Following methods are used to connect to the internet.
i. Telephone Modem
ii. DSL
iii. Cable Modem
Q6. Define the following.
a. WWW
b. Website
c. Web Browser
d. URL
Ans. WWW: The World Wide Web (WWW) is a network of online content that is formatted
in HTML and accessed via HTTP.
Website: A website is a collection of web pages maintained by an organization or an
individual, e.g. www.google.com etc.
Web Browser: A Web Browser is a software application which is used to access world
wide web, e.g. Internet Explorer etc.
URL: Each website on internet has a unique address called URL, e.g. www.yahoo.com
etc.
Q7. Why we use search engine in internet?
Ans. A software program that searches collects and reports information to specified terms.
Examples of commonly used search engines are Google, Yahoo, MSN etc.
