V. Read the following passage and choose the best answer to complete each sentence: (5 points)
In the world today, particularly in the two most industrialized areas, North America and Europe, recycling is
big news. People are talking about it, practicing it, and discovering new ways to be sensitive to the
environment. Recycling means finding was to use products a second time. The motto of the recycling
movement is “ Reduce, Reuse, Recycle”.
The first step is to reduce garbage. In stories, a shopper has to buy products in blisters packs, boxes and
expensive plastic wrappings. A hamburger from a fast food restaurant comes in lots of packaging: usually
paper, a box and a bag. All that packaging is wasted resources. People should try to buy things that are
wrapped simply, and reuse cups and utensils. Another way to reduce waste is to buy high-quality products.
When low quality appliances break, many customers throw them away and buy new ones- a loss of more
resources and more energy. For example, if a customer buys high-quality appliance that can be easily repaired,
the manufacturer receives an important message. In the same way, if a customer chooses a product with less
packaging, that customer sends an important message to manufacturers. To reduce garbage, the throwaway
must stop.
The second step is to reuse. It is better to buy juices and soft drinks in returnable bottles. After customers
empty the bottles, they can return them to the store. The manufacturers of the drinks collect the bottles, wash
them, and then fill them again. The energy that is necessary to make new bottles is saved. In some parts of the
world, returning bottles for money is a common practice. In those places, the garbage dumps have relatively
little glass and plastic from throwaway bottles.
The third step is being environmentally sensitive is to recycle. Spent motor oil can be cleaned and used again.
Aluminum cans are expensive to make. It takes the same amount of energy to make one aluminum can as it
does to run a color TV set for three hours. When people collect and recycle aluminum (for new cans), they
help save one of the world’s precious resources.

VI. Read the following passage and choose the correct answer to each question.
Write your answers on the answer sheet. (10 pts)
We find that bright children are rarely held back by mixed-ability teaching. On the contrary, both their
knowledge and experience are enriched. We feel that there are many disadvantages in streaming pupils. It
does not take into account the fact that children develop at different rates. It can have a bad effect on both the
bright and the not-so-bright child. After all, it can be quite discouraging to be at the bottom of the top grade!
Besides, it is rather unreal to grade people just according to their intellectual ability. This is only one aspect
of their total personality. We are concerned to develop the abilities of all our pupils to the full, not just their
academic ability. We also value personal qualities and social skills, and we find that mixed-ability teaching
contributes to all these aspects of learning.
In our classroom, we work in various ways. The pupils often work in groups; this gives them the opportunity
to learn to co-operate, to share, and to develop leadership skills. They also learn how to cope with the personal
problems as well as learning how to think, to make decisions, to analyze and evaluate, to communicate
effectively. The pupils learn from each other as well as from the teachers.
Sometimes the pupils work in pairs; sometimes the work on individual tasks and assignments, they can do
this at their own speed. They also have some formal class teaching when this is appropriate. We encourage our
pupils to use the library, and we teach them the skills they need in order to do this effectively. An advanced
pupil can do advanced works; it does not matter what age the child is. We expect our pupils to do their best,
not their least, and we give them every encouragement to attain this goal.
