CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

Bacoor Eco Park, located in the city of Bacoor, Philippines, is a significant green space that offers
a variety of natural and recreational resources. Despite its potential, the park remains underutilized and
lacks the prominence it deserves as a premier tourist destination and a central recreational hub for the
local community. This study explores the necessary transformations to enhance Bacoor Eco Park's appeal
and utility, aiming to address its current challenges and harness its full potential for the benefit of
Bacoor's residents and visitors.

Historically, Bacoor has been known for its rich cultural heritage and strategic location within the
province of Cavite. The city has undergone rapid urbanization and development, leading to increased
population density and a pressing need for recreational spaces where residents can relax, engage in
physical activities, and connect with nature. Bacoor Eco Park presents an ideal opportunity to fulfill this
need, but its current state falls short of providing a vibrant, attractive, and multifunctional space that can
draw both local and even international tourists.

Several factors contribute to the underdevelopment of Bacoor Eco Park. Infrastructure deficiencies,
limited marketing efforts, inadequate maintenance, and safety concerns are among the key issues that
hinder the park's growth and popularity. Furthermore, there is a lack of comprehensive planning and
community involvement in the park's development, which has led to a disconnect between the park's
potential and its current use.

Local government plays a critical role in the development and management of public spaces such as
Bacoor Eco Park. Effective policies, resource allocation, and strategic planning are essential to transform
the park into a premier destination. Additionally, active community engagement is crucial for ensuring
that the park meets the needs and preferences of Bacooreños, fostering a sense of ownership and
stewardship among residents.
This study is grounded in the belief that transforming Bacoor Eco Park can bring substantial benefits to
the local community and the broader region. Enhanced tourism can drive economic growth, create jobs,
and generate revenue for local businesses. Improved recreational facilities can promote physical health,
social interaction, and environmental awareness among residents. Moreover, a well-developed park can
serve as a symbol of civic pride and community spirit.

In recent years, there has been growing recognition of the importance of green spaces in urban areas for
promoting sustainable development and improving quality of life. Many cities worldwide have
successfully revitalized their parks and public spaces, demonstrating that strategic investments and
community involvement can lead to significant positive outcomes. By studying these examples and
applying relevant insights to Bacoor Eco Park, this research aims to develop a comprehensive plan that
addresses the current challenges and maximizes the park's potential.

In summary, this study seeks to explore the transformation of Bacoor Eco Park into the premier tourist
destination and recreational hub for Bacooreños. It will examine the impacts on local government policies
and community engagement, aiming to provide actionable recommendations that can enhance the park's
appeal and utility, ultimately benefiting the entire Bacoor community.

Figure 1: Conceptual Framework of the Study

This conceptual framework illustrates the integrated approach required to transform Bacoor Eco
Park into a premier tourist destination and recreational hub. It highlights the need for coordinated efforts
between local government and the community, supported by effective planning, implementation, and
continuous evaluation to achieve sustainable and impactful outcomes.
Statement of the Problem

The transformation of Bacoor Eco Park into a premier tourist destination and recreational hub
faces several challenges that hinder its full potential. Despite the park's natural beauty and strategic
location, it remains underutilized and lacks the necessary infrastructure, community engagement, and
strategic marketing to attract both local and international visitors. This study aims to identify and address
the specific problems that need to be resolved to achieve the successful transformation of Bacoor Eco
Park. Specifically, the researchers aim to answer the following questions:

1. How can Bacoor Eco Park be transformed into a premier tourist destination and recreational hub for
Bacooreños?

2. How can the park's development be made more sustainable?

3. What strategies can be employed to enhance community engagement and participation?

Hypothesis

Null Hypothesis (Ho): The transformation of Bacoor Eco Park into a premier tourist destination and
recreational hub will not lead to significant changes in utilization by residents and tourists, community
engagement, or local government support, and will not result in substantial socio-economic and
environmental benefits for Bacoorenos.

Alternative Hypothesis (Ha): The transformation of Bacoor Eco Park into a premier tourist destination
and recreational hub will lead to increased utilization by residents and tourists, enhanced community
engagement, and improved local government support, resulting in significant socio-economic and
environmental benefits for Bacoorenos.

Significance of the Study

This study is significant in that its findings will provide practical insights to improve the Bacoor
Eco Park, which would contribute to community well-being, economic growth, and environmental
sustainability for Bacooreños and future generations.

Students. The researchers aim to highlight the relationship between urban planning, community
participation, and sustainable development while providing insightful information about the methods and
results for transforming open spaces.
Community. The transformation of Bacoor Eco Park into a premier tourist destination will
significantly enhance the community's quality of life by providing improved recreational facilities and
fostering social cohesion. It will also positively impact residents' livelihoods by creating economic
opportunities and jobs through increased tourism and local business growth.

Future researchers. This thesis will help future researchers by providing a detailed case study on
transforming public spaces into vibrant community hubs and offering practical insights into urban
planning, community engagement, and sustainable development. It will serve as a valuable reference for
assessing the socio-economic and environmental impacts of similar projects.

Scope and Delimitation of the Study

The study is centered on Bacoor Eco Park in Molino 5, Bacoor. The primary focus is on the park
itself and its surrounding community. The research is limited to Bacoor Eco Park and does not extend to
other tourist sites or parks within Bacoor or other regions. This narrow focus ensures a detailed and
specific examination of the case study.
