Procedure For Emergency Evacuation Of Passengers
Identify yourself and explain to passengers that they are safe and that the evacuation procedure is
under way to evacuate them safely from the car.
A. Ask questions:
How many passengers are in the car?
Are all the passengers well? Is there anyone injured?
Are the car doors open or closed?
Etc.
Open the landing door a few centimetres of the floor nearest to the car and verify the position
of the car and status of car door.
D. Inform passengers about the steps that you are going to take and tell them that they will
notice movements, such us: the car is going to move slowly in up or down direction, etc.
Where possible
On same occasions it is possible to return the car to normal operation, once you have analysed
some basic points. The following ideas could help you to achieve this objective:
A. Perform a quick diagnostic check of the root cause of the trouble from the machine room
Check the status of the main switch, fuses, etc.
Check the status of safety relays and the controller lighting indicators, in order to
determine the type of failure, such as: door lock failure, car door gate failure, safety chain
failure, etc.
If the circumstances permitting, use other tools to perform the diagnosis of the problem
such as: voltmeter, test tool, etc.
B. Resolve the problem if it is possible and ensure that passengers exit safely.
IT IS FORBIDDEN TO USE TEMPORARY JUMPERS TO RESOLVE PROBLEMS WHILE
PASSENGERS ARE TRAPPED IN THE CAR.

STEP 3: MOVE THE CAR TO NEAREST LANDING
Where possible.
If the elevator cannot be easily returned to Normal operation.
A. Decide whether or not the passengers can be evacuated to the nearest landing without
moving the car. This decision depends on the following factors:
Note: Do not open the landing doors until someone is at the landing to assist the passengers when they
exit the car. If the car is more than 30 cm. from floor levels a ladder or similar should be used to help the
passengers to exit. Have the ladder available before opening doors, because some passengers will not wait
for the ladder when the doors are open. Help the passengers to exit all times and pay special attention
when helping children and elderly persons.
9/10
B. If the car is in a position where it is safe to evacuate the passengers, proceed as follows:
1. Switch off the main switch and lock out and tag.
2. Prepare to assist passengers to exit (another person, a ladder, etc.)
3. Open the doors and assist the passengers to exit.
STEP 4: MOVE OF CAR UNDER ITS OWN POWER
Where possible
If the elevator cannot be easily returned to Normal operation.
If passengers cannot easily evacuated without moving the car.
A. For electric
1. Put the maint switch position and push the up/down buttons to the nearest landing.
2. Switch off the main switch and lock out and tag.
3. Prepare the necessary to assist passengers to exit (another person, a ladder, etc).
4. Open the doors and assist the passengers to exit.
STEP 5: MOVE THE CAR WITHOUT POWER
Where possible
If the elevator cannot be easily returned to Normal operation.
If passengers cannot be easily evacuated without moving the car.
Follow the specific procedure described in the leaflet “Emergency Rescue Operation”
that is in the machine room.
Some key aspects which are common to all equipment and that should be remembered
are the following:
Verify the car position by any available means such as: paint marks on the
traction ropes, buzzer sound in the controller.
