MASS BLOOD DONATION/MOBILE BLOOD DONATION

Republic Act No. 7719, also known as the National Blood Services Act of
1994, promotes voluntary non-remunerated blood donation to provide suffi-
cient supply of safe blood.

Quezon City General Hospital has been actively participating in the DOH
strive for the nations healthcare as its fundamental requirement for citizen
empowerment.

Blood Collection Annual Target

To ensure adequate, stable, and sustainable blood supply readily

available blood in the blood bank for timely response to patients in need of
transfusions by maintaining and managing an optimum blood stock inven-
tory in the blood bank. We compute for the total blood needs/demand of the
hospital annually. Taking into account the deferrals and wastages (loss of
donors between recruitment and donation / loss of donated units during col-
lection and processing).

Donor Recruitment

We collaborate and network with all partners including stakeholders in

blood donation activities for the successful implementation of the Voluntary
Blood Donation program.

Coordination with local health unit/LGU regarding the date and time of pro-
posed blood donation activity, number of potential donors and the venue of
activity.

MBD Staffing and Logistics Requisition

To ensure adequate staffing and availability of logistics for the conduct of

MBD activity, thru the pathology department for approval and scheduling of
the activity. Confirmation and reminder to the prospective blood donors is
needed to increase the probability of attendance of prospective blood
donors in the blood donation activity.
Blood Donation Activity
Donor Selection
To assess the suitability of an individual to be a blood donor so that blood
donation is safe for the donor as well as blood products are safe for the re-
cipients. The following stations are set up: Donor reception, Donor inter-
view and pre-donation counseling, Hemoglobin screening.

Blood Collection of a Qualified Blood Donor

To ensure that collection of blood from a blood donation is in accordance
with Good Manufacturing Practices, thereby reduce the risks to donors,
phlebotomists, and patients. Donor identification in donors questionnaire,
blood bags, blood collection tubes should be identical. Important to an ex-
perienced phlebotomist are vein selection, skin preparation, mixing at the
first contact of blood with the anticoagulant, blood sample collection from
the diversion pouch with proper labeling of tubes and unit, blood bags are
mixed every 45 seconds with constant monitoring the unit and donor status.
Post-phlebotomy procedures after termination of phlebotomy includes
blood unit preparation for cold chain management.

Completed donation
Post-Donation Care is done to develop positive donor experience thereby
increase the probability for the donor to return for their future donations.
Post-donation phlebotomy instructions and refreshments are then given.

Return to the Hospital

To ensure that blood units and samples are stored within the correct tem-
perature range and conditions, from the point of collection to the hospital
blood bank for processing and testing. Storage and transport of collected
blood units are with a Cold chain monitoring and recording form. Upon
arrival in the hospital blood bank these are all properly endorsed.
