1- For a liquid–vapor system whose state corresponds to point E in the figure below, phase
diagram, find the overall mole fraction of B in the system and find the mole fraction of B in
each phase present in the system. Assume the scales in the phase diagram are linear.
2- Let the two-component system in Question 1, contain 10.00 mol of B and 6.66 mol of C and
have pressure PE. How many phases are present in the system? Find the number of moles of
B present in each phase.
3- The figure below shows the liquid–liquid phase diagram of water (W) plus 1-butanol (B) at
the vapor pressure of the system. Find the number of moles of each substance in each phase
if 4.0 mol of W and 1.0 mol of B are shaken together at 30°C.
4- (Atkins Ed.9 5.28a) Figure below shows the phase diagram for two partially miscible liquids,
which can be taken to be that for water (A) and 2-methyl-1-propanol (B). Describe what will
be observed when a mixture of composition xB = 0.8 is heated, at each stage giving the
number, composition, and relative amounts of the phases present.

5- (Atkins Ed.9 5.26b) The following temperature-composition data were obtained for a mixture
of two liquids A and B at 1.00 atm, where x is the mole fraction in the liquid phase and y is
the mole fraction in the vapour in equilibrium.
The boiling points are 1240C and 1550C for A and B, repectively.
a) Plot the T versus composition diagram for the mixture.
b) What is the composition of the vapour in equilibrium with the liquid of composition
i) xA = 0.50 and ii) xA = 0.33.
6- Given below are the phase diagrams of “ideal” solutions of hexane and heptane.
a. Label the phases.
b. For a solution of 1 mol of heptane and hexane each, estimate the vapour pressure at
700C when the vapourization (upon reduction of external P) just begins. What is the mole
fraction of hexane in the liquid phase, and in the vapour phase?
c. What is the vapour pressure of the solution at 700C when 1 drop of liquid remains? What
are the mole fractions?
