Dear Sir / Madam,

As you are aware that, the Central Public Health and Environmental Engineering
Organization (CPHEEO) is a technical wing of Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs
and assist Ministry in the matters related to Urban Water Supply' Used Water
Management, Solid Waste Management and Strom Water Drainage Systems in the
country. CPHEEO not only supports the Ministry in policy formulation but also handhold
States/UTs by way of technical advice, guidelines, scrutiny and appraisal of schemes
and propagation of new technologies in the PHE sector.

Every year CPHEEO is inviting applied research proposals trom 12 academic


institutes empanelled with Ministry and NEERI in the area of Urban Water Supply, Used
Water Management, Solid Waste Management and Strom Water Drainage Systems
under the "PHE Sector Development Scheme" to conduct research through them. ln
this connection, CPHEEO has identified 19 research topics / areas for the year 2024'25
(List Enclosed as Annexure-A).

ln view of the above, you are hereby requested to select the topics (not more
than 3) as per your expertise and submit the willingness to take up the project along
with brief proposal covering objective, scope of work, approach and methodology adopted,
duration, tentative cost, outcome and output of the project latest by 20th June, 2024 lo

List of topics / areas for carryinq out aDplied research for Fy 2024-25.

Research Studies:

1. Study on (a) the feasibility of reducing number of manholes due to availability of sewer
cleaning machines with long stretches. (b) financial viability of trenchless vs. Open cut
method of laying sewers in different type of localities. (c) techniques and approaches
practiced across globe to quickly lay sewer pipe lines and repair roads in barest minimum
time.
2. Assessment of the impact of untreated sewage disposal underground on ground water in
different hydro-geological areas and identification of ways switch over to safely managed
sanitation practices.
3. study on the effectiveness of phytoremediation and bioremediation techniques being
adopted, to reduce pollution in drains and mitigate fines imposed by regulatory authorities.
4. ln_ventory of Sewage Treatment Plants (STps) across the country alo;g with identification
of deficiencies in process units/components requiring retrofitting/up gradation.
5. Research study on strengthening of on-site sanitation systema, inCluding improvement in
containment, conveyance, treatment and monitoring mechanism leading to safely
managed sanitation.
6. Gap assFssment in policy including those based on study of used water management
policies of different States/UTs and recommendations to strengthen policy. This will also
suggest ways to strengthen sewer tax-collection system for sustiinable option.
T Study on the implementation feasibility of shallow sewers/small bore/low-cost sewers tn
narrow lanes and in smaller towns with objective to reduce cost and pubtic inconvenience
due to excavation of roads.

along with documentary of 3 & 5 minutes.
3. Guidance document on the implementation of Faecal sludge Treatment plants (FSTP)
and co-treatment of faecal sludge in Sewage Treatment planta (STp).
4. Development of model bylaws for UWM aligned with safely managed sanitation.
5. compilation of best practices highlighting successful implemeritations, including house
service connections, sewer networks, pumping(solar options), STp; and
recommendations.
b Health assessment of selected drains (50 nos.) in terms of water quality and public health
nsks and identification of policy gap and recommendations to strengthen.
7. Advisory on the recycle and reuse of UWM and biosolids with suitable case studies in
small and medium towns
8. Development of a model Detailed project Report (DpR) a. lncremental approach b. whole
town coverage c. l&D plus treatment
9 standardize design, drawing and estimation of Nature based/less mechanised srps of 1,
2 and 5 MLD capaclty suitable to small and medium towns.
10. Advisory on operation and Maintenance (o&M) of community Toiteupublic Toilet (cr/pr)
using different models. Compilation of case selected case siudies (10 nos.) aspirational
toilets suitable to tourists/religious/high foot-fall places.

Evaluation / Audit Reports:

1. Evaluation of small-scale STP variants with claims of superior performance like Soil
Biotechnology, Tiger Bio filter, Horizontal gravel filter with/without soakpit.
2. Evaluation of 50 Faecal sludge Treatment plants (FSTps) setup in stp states with
different technologies.
