Academic Year 2022-23

Unit: Work, Energy & Power Grade: MYP 4/C2

Key Concept: Change

Related Concepts: Energy and Transformation

Global Context: Globalization and sustainability

Students will explore the natural world and its laws; the interaction
between people and the natural world; how humans use their
understanding of scientific principles

SOI: The need for sustainability is changing the way in which we

produce, and transform the energy.

ATL - Critical thinking skills, collaboration skills and communication

skills
Connection with Assessment: This assessment will make student
aware of how work can be calculates and how we can decide its
nature. Further this will give scope to think critically on the
questions assessed. Also working in group and answering the
questions orally will give them opportunity to enhance their
collaborative and communication skills.
Learner profile: Communicator and Reflective
Performance based task
Experiment demonstration and oral presentation
Task Sheet
Activity:

Title: Oral assessment on Work done

Aim: To understand how work is calculated under different

situations and what its nature will be.

Materials Pictures with different situations will be projected on

: screen.

Instructions:
1. Look at the pictures shown below.
2. Calculate the work done for each situation using the formula of
work done.
3. Judge the nature of work done.
4. Each member of the group will explain to the class that how it
is calculated and What is its nature (positive or negative or
zero work done)
Group - I

Force = 20N, s = 2ᴨr Force = 35N, s = 0.5m

Force = 38N, s = 5.5m Force = 28N, s = 1.5m

Group - II

Force = 250N, s = 20m Force = 10N, s = 0.5cm

Force = 2.5N, s = 2cm

Force = 80N, s = 250cm

Group - III

Force = 150N, s = 3m Force = 20N, s = 8.5cm

Force of Friction = 15N, s = 1m

Force = 10N, s = 15m

Observations:
Obs.
Work done in (J) Nature of Work Done
No.
150N*3m
1. = 450J + (Positive)
20N*8.5cm*cos45◦
¿ 20∗8.5∗1 √ 2
2. = 120.20 + (Positive)
10N*15m*cos90◦
= 10N*15m*0
3. = 0J 0 (Neutral)
15N*1*cos180
= 15*-1*1
4. = 15J -(Negative)
Questions:
1. Define work?
Work done is the energy transformed using force from a certain
distance.

2. State equation you use for calculating work?

Work = Force*Displacement
Equations:
1) N*M
2) Force*Displacement Cos○

3. Describe how you found work and its nature?

We found work by using the formula of work given above, and
then we identified the nature by checking whether the value of
the work done was in positive, negative or zero. And we also
referred to the pictures given to find the same.

4. Explain type of Nature of work you got in all cases with

reference to force taken into consideration?
We got positive, negative and zero in our cases.
If cos is 0 it will be positive, if cos is 90 it will be 0, and if cos is
more than 90 it will be negative.

5. What are your conclusions?

I learned how to solve work in real-life scenarios.

Reflection Questions:
1. How did this activity feel? Was it hard or easy?
2. What was the easiest part about this activity? What was the most
challenging?
3. How nervous were you to speak in front of your peers?
4. How was your feeling beforehand compare to the feeling when
you actually presented for your peers?
5. What would you like to improve on next time?
