LAS No. 6
Exterior and Interior Angles of Convex Polygons
Objective
To derive inductively the relationship of exterior and interior angles of a convex polygon
(M7GE-IIIf-1).
Learning Activity

Note that the interior angle and an exterior angle of a convex polygon on the same
vertex forms a linear pair, thus, are supplementary.

ACTIVITY 1
POLYGON-SUM FORMULA
Materials: protractor, straightedge or ruler
Instructions:
1. The first three polygons are given with angle measurements. Find the sum of the interior
angles of each polygon. Write the angle sum on the appropriate column of the table
below.
2. On the fourth polygon, determine the number of sides of the polygon. Identify the interior
angles and measure each. Write the angle measure for each interior angle on the figure.
3. Find the sum of the angle measures of the interior angles of the fourth polygon.
(Hint: Round off the sum to the nearest tens. Last digit must be zero.)
4. Record the sum under the appropriate column of the table below.
5. Answer the questions below.

bigger than 180º
Questions for Discussion:
1. Is the sum of the interior angles of each polygon a multiple of 180?
(If your answer is NO, go back and repeat the activity. Make sure that you
measure properly the interior angles of the polygon.)
2. How many times bigger than 180º is the angle sum of each polygon? Write your
answer under the appropriate column on the third row.
3. Compare it (No.2) with the number of sides of the polygon. Is it greater or lesser?
By how many? Is it the same with the other polygon? If yes, write the appropriate
algebraic expression in terms of n .
Answer: _______________
(If your answer is NO, carefully analyse again your data in the table and repeat
Questions No.2 and 3. Your answers must be consistent to all three polygons.)
4. How, then, can you find the sum of the interior angles of a polygon given the
number of sides? Write the sum as an equation or formula using algebraic
expressions.
Polygon-Sum
Formula

Activity 1 should lead to this conclusion:

The sum of the interior angles of a convex polygon, S, with n sides is given by:
S= ( n−2 ) 180 ° .

EXERCISE 1

Using the Polygon-Sum Formula, find S for each of the polygon given.

ACTIVITY 2
THE SHRINKING PENTAGON

The figure sequence of the shrinking pentagon illustrates the relationship of exterior
angles of convex polygons. Study the sequence carefully and answer the following questions.
Questions for Discussion:
1. Measure the exterior angles in each sequence. Do the same numbered angles have
the same angle measure? ______________________________________________
2. What happens to the measures of the exterior angles of the pentagon in the last
figure?
____________________________________________________________________
3. What conjecture can you derive from this sequence?
____________________________________________________________________

The sequence in Activity 2 suggests this conjecture:

The sum of the exterior angles of a convex polygon (one at each vertex) is 360° .

Calculate the measure of each lettered angle using the relationships of interior and
exterior angles of convex polygons.
