7. “Beasts of England” is a song that Old Major learned in childhood.
This song encourages animals to overthrow humans' domination which is unfair, harsh and
cruel: «Soon or late the day is coming, Tyrant Man shall be o'erthrown, and the fruitful fields
of England shall be trod by beasts alone.» chapter 1, p.4, § 3
8. The pigs are considered as the most intelligent of the farm animals and sit in the front of the
audience, as a sign of superiority: the pigs, who settled down in the straw immediately in
front of the platform.» ( chapter 1, §3, p.1)
9. The animals vote that wild animals should be considered “comrades:” « it was agreed by an
overwhelming majority that rats were comrades.» ( chapter 1, §6, p.3)
10.Old Major warns the animals not to adopt the habits of man and lists seven specific things
they must not do: « in fighting against Man, we must not come to resemble him. Even when
you have conquered him, do not adopt his vices.... All animals are equal.» chapter 1, §7,

6. Mollie is concerned that she won’t get to wear hair ribbons or enjoy lump sugar after the
rebellion. Moreover, after the animals’ rebellion, she is discovered to be missing. She was
actually in Mrs Jones’ bedroom, « admiring herself in the glass in a very foolish manner »
with one of Mrs Jones’ blue ribbons. (Chapter 2, §6, page 3)
7. Farmer Jones starts drinking more and neglects to feed the animals for over twenty-four
hours : « the man had milked the cows in the early morning and then had gone out rabbiting,
without bothering to feed the animals. » (chapter 2,§4,p.2)
8. The pigs reveal that they have taught themselves to read and write : « they had taught
themselves to read and write from an old spelling book which ahd belonged to Mr Jones’s
children... » ( chapter 2, §9, p.3)

9. The Seven Commandments are:

Whatever goes upon two legs is an enemy.


Whatever goes upon four legs, or has wings, is a friend.
No animal shall wear clothes.
No animal shall sleep in a bed.
No animal shall drink alcohol.
No animal shall kill any other animal.
All animals are equal.

10.It is implied that Napoleon stole the milk, taking advantage of the harvest: « So the animals
trooped down to the hayfield to begin the harvest, and when they came back in the evening it
was notices that the milk had disappeared. » (chapter 2, §9, p.4)

the brainworkers of the farm : « we pigs are brainworkers. The whole management and
