Understanding onomatopoeia
A veterinarian visited your school recently to give a talk and answer questions
from students. You are writing a transcript of the Q & A session for the school
newspaper. Complete the transcript with onomatopoeic words.
Dr Leung: OK, now I’ll be happy to answer any of your questions. Yes?
Student 1: I have a question. Why do bees make a (1) buzz sound?
Dr Leung: Well, it’s actually their wings that make this sound. Did you know
that they can flap their wings about 230 times per second?
Student 4: Yes, I have a question. Why do owls only (5) hoot at night?
Dr Leung: Well, owls are nocturnal. That means they sleep during the day
and are awake at night. That’s why you can only hear their calls at
night.
Student 5: I really like frogs. Can you tell me any interesting facts about them?
Dr Leung: Hmm, let me think. Oh, did you know that all species of frogs have
a unique (6) croak? This means that frogs can identify each other
by the sounds they make.
Student 7: I visited a farm recently and saw some ducks, but they did not
(8) quack. Isn’t that strange?
Dr Leung: Not necessarily. Actually, only mallard ducks make that sound.
Other species of ducks make various other types of sounds.

Consolidation
You are browsing a pet forum online. Fill in the blanks with words about different
parts of animals, words about caring for animals and onomatopoeic words.
Make sure your answers are grammatically correct.
TerryM: Yesterday, I took my dog to the park. He saw a snake and it (1) hissed at
him. I guess it terrified him because he ran off. When I finally found him
again, he tried to bite me! What should I do?
Vetgal: First of all, you should always put your dog on a (2) lead when you go out.
That is for his safety and the safety of others. Secondly, if your dog is
aggressive, you should put a (3) muzzle on him when you go out so that
he doesn’t bite anyone. I’d suggest that you do some (4) training with him
to teach him not to bite. Remember to be patient throughout the process.
Brad03: Hi, I also have a question about my dog. Recently, she has been
scratching herself a lot with her (5) paws/claws. I’m not sure what to do.
Vetgal: Well, if she’s scratching herself a lot, that may be a sign of (6) fleas. You
can use a special shampoo to get rid of them. You should also (7) groom
your pet daily. That means brushing her (8) fur. You should also bathe
and brush her teeth regularly.
qbbgal: Hi! Could you answer my question too? I have a pet bird. It used to
(9) tweet all the time, but now it barely makes a sound. What’s up with
that?
Vetgal: Well, I can’t say anything for sure without examining the bird. However, in
general, birds do that a lot more in spring and summer than in winter, so I
don’t think it’s anything out of the ordinary. For birds, just make sure their
(10) feathers are clean. They need them to stay warm. Also, make sure
your bird has something to hang onto with its (11) claws and that its food
dish isn’t too deep for it to reach into with its (12) beak.
HenryO: Hi, I found a scared kitten wandering alone in the street. It looks really
cute and has long (13) whiskers on its face. I’d like to keep it, but I’m not
sure what to do.
Vetgal: Henry, you should take the kitten to a (14) veterinarian as soon as
possible to make sure it’s healthy. You’ll also be able to get proper advice
about how to feed the kitten. Remember, it’s important not to (15)
overfeed it. Eventually, it’ll also need (16) vaccinations to keep it from
getting any deadly diseases.
MonMon: Doc, I have a pet goldfish at home. It used to swim around its bowl quite
quickly, but now it only moves around slowly. What should I do?
Vetgal: Try to have a look at its (17) fins. Fish need these to swim through the
water. It’s possible it has an injury. Also, make sure to keep its bowl clean.
Remember, fish breathe through their (18) gills. If the water is too dirty, it’ll
affect your fish’s health.
