Adjectives are describing words. They usually answer questions like – “WHAT COLOUR?”,
“WHAT SHAPE?”, “WHAT SIZE?” and “WHAT KIND OF …?”.

A SURPRISE FOR MOHAN
Last year, Mohan’s uncle gave him two white mice. It was his birthday present.
Mohan called them Jimmy and Jeanie. His father made a cage for them. Mohan put the cage
on a shelf.
One day, Jimmy fell out of the cage and died. Mohan was very sad.
Soon, his uncle visited him. Mohan took Jeanie out of the cage. He put her into a box
with straw in it. He showed Jeanie to his uncle. After that, Mohan put the box with Jeanie
inside the cage. Next morning, he opened the cage. What a surprise! There were four tiny
white mice in the box with Jeanie. They were her babies. Mohan was happy again.

READING
A MYSTERIOUS THIEF
A lady noticed that her cream jug was interfered with whenever she left it on the
dining-table. She was quite puzzled over the matter and resolved to try and discover the
thief. She filled the jug with cream, placed it in its usual position and went into the next
room. There, she peeped through a tiny opening and in a short time saw a cat jump on the
table. It put its paw into the cream and licked it. This was done again and again. The lady
thus found out the secret of the mystery.
THE CROW AND THE PITCHER
A thirsty crow was one day looking for some water to drink. It came to a pitcher and
saw that it contained only a little water. It could not reach that small quantity of water. It
began to think hard what to do. After a while, it flew off to a nearby stream and returned
with a stone in its beak. It dropped the stone into the pitcher and the water rose. It
repeated this many times until it was able to reach the water and drink to its heart’s
content. That crow certainly had a very clever little head. Don’t you think so?
