educators from Schools Division Office of Pasig City headed by its Officer-In-Charge
Schools Division Superintendent, Ma. Evalou Concepcion A. Agustin in partnership
with the Local Government of Pasig through its mayor, Honorable Victor Ma. Regis

Architecture
Vigan, considered as the “Intramuros
of the North”, retains the Spanish colonial
architecture along its narrow and cobble-
stoned streets known as Calle Crisologo.
Established in the 16th century,
Vigan is the best-preserved example of a
planned Spanish colonial town in Asia. Its
architecture reflects the coming together of
cultural elements from elsewhere in the
Philippines, from China and from Europe,
resulting in a culture and townscape that
have no parallel anywhere in East and
MK Ranido
South-East Asia.
The two storey structures are built of brick and wood, with a steeply pitched
roof reminiscent of traditional Chinese architecture. The exterior walls of the upper
storey are enclosed by window panels of kapis shells framed in wood which can be
slid back for better ventilation. Most of the existing buildings were probably built in
the mid-18th to late 19th centuries.
Vigan is unique for having preserved much of its Hispanic colonial
character, particularly its grid street pattern and historic urban lay out. Its
significance also lies on how the different architectural influences are blended to
create a homogenous townscape.
Vigan represents a unique fusion of Asian building design and construction
with European colonial architecture and planning. It is an exceptionally intact and
well-preserved example of a European trading town in East and South-East Asia.
Textile
Now that most fabrics are mass
produced with imported threads from overseas,
textiles carefully handwoven with Philippine
cotton are becoming increasingly difficult to
find. One of these textiles is the Abel or Inabel
of the Ilocos region in northern Philippines.
Pottery
Traditional Ilocano handicrafts, like the
“inabel” fabrics & “burnay” jars are folk arts that
continue to tell its tales for many hundred years
now. They are not only relevant to the northern
region but also to the development of art &
culture in the Philippines.
Pottery is an ancient art form & in Ilocos
this tradition of molding unglazed earthen jars is
called “burnay”. It was originally used to age
vinegar, wine & “bagoong” or fish paste. In
Vigan, the clay is kneaded by a carabao before it
MK Ranido goes to the potter’s wheel that is today still spun
by foot. It is then shaped into jars, dried & fired
in a kiln. These fragile pieces of art combine the elements of earth, water, wind &
fire that only expert “agdamdamili” or potter can only achieve.
The process of making a burnay jar starts off by combining locally-sourced
clay with a type of fine sand called anay. . The two are mixed on a circular pit
trampled over by a carabao. They say that this is one of the factors why these jars
are much more robust than ordinary ones.

Bolinao, Pangasinan – while singing, writing poetry or even fetching water
can win a woman’s hand in old rural Philippines, in this town a man courting a
woman lady must before all else literally weave his way to her heart.
To this day, much pride goes into the tradition of weaving mats from buri or
raffia leaves in Bolinao. On Santiago Island, northeast coast of bolinao, rests a
small village called Salud, a peaceful barangay where most of its residents are
dedicated to weaving the best buri mats, also known as the “Bolinao banig”.
