GENERAL SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS
One of the primary considerations in designing and manufacturing this Gilcrest Propaver
was to make the machine and the operation of same as safe as possible. Shielding,
simple adjustments and other safety features were built into the Paver wherever possible.
1) Only the operators should be allowed on the operator’s platform when the paver is in
operation.
2) Clothing worn by all persons working close to the paver should be fairly tight and
belted. Loose jackets, shirts or pants should never be worn because of the danger of
getting caught in moving parts.
3) Be sure all shields and guards are in place and in good condition before starting the
machine.
4) Always mount and dismount the paver from the rear, using the walkway, steps and
handrails provided. Never dismount paver to the side, or forward.
5) Assure that all hands and feet are clear of moving parts before starting paver.
6) Make sure everyone is clear of the paver before starting so they cannot be struck by
or caught in moving parts.
7) Never move the machine with the hopper bed lifted in the “UP” or servicing position,
this will make the paver heavy on the rear, and very hard to control.
8) Keep the operator’s platform clean; do not use it as a place to carry loose tools, lunch
boxes, etc.
9) Refuel the paver only when the engine has been shut off. Do not permit sparks, open
flames or smoking within 50 feet of paver when refueling. Never refuel paver with screed
heaters lit and operating.
10) Never allow horseplay near the paver when it is in operation or being serviced.
2 ProPaver by Gilcrest
Escaping hydraulic fluid under pressure can have sufficient force
to penetrate the skin, causing serious personal injury. Before
disconnecting any hydraulic lines, be sure to relieve all pressure.
Before applying pressure to a system, be sure all connections are
tight and that all lines, tubes, and hoses are not damaged. Fluid
escaping from a very small hole can be almost invisible. Use a
piece of cardboard or wood, rather than hands, to search for
suspected leaks.
11) If injured by escaping fluid, see a doctor at once. Serious infection or reaction can
develop if proper medical treatment is not administered immediately.
12) Always be sure that all control switches are in the “OFF”, “Pause”, or
“Neutral” position, hopper wings and screed are lowered and the engine is shut
off before leaving the operator’s station.
13) Never use the wash down system when the screed heaters are lit or operating.
15) Do not open propane valves to the screed burners unless flame is present to
light the burners. An accumulation of unburned gas could result in explosion. Do
not allow smoking when lighting propane fired screed burners.
16) Do not allow smoking or the use of open flame when checking the electrolyte
level in the battery. An explosion could result. If skin or eyes are exposed flush
immediately with water and see a doctor.
17) Never attempt to service or enter under the elevated hopper bed unless the
safety prop is in place and secured. Serious Personal Injury Or Death Could
Result!

Safety Suggestions for persons working in the area of an operating paver
1) When working in the vicinity of the machine, stand in full view of the operator; but
never in front of the machine when the machine is operating. Stay clear of hopper, side
arms, and screed when machine is operating. Do not walk in front of the hopper or ex-
tended screed, or stand at the end of the screed if the hydraulic screed extensions are
being used.
2) If necessary to remove spillage from the roadway, have the operator stop the machine
first. Working close to a moving machine is dangerous
3) Do not remove paving material from the hopper or auger trough while the
paver is operating. The operator should be advised when adjustments are being made.
7) If any safety related defects are discovered, inform the operator to shut the
machine down and correct the defect.

OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS
One of the primary considerations in designing and manufacturing this Gilcrest Propaver
was to make the machine and the operation of same as safe as possible. Shielding,
simple adjustments and other safety features were built into the paver wherever possible.
Inspect your paver before beginning each day’s operation. Be sure all tools and loose
items (clothing, lunch buckets, etc.) are removed from the paver. Controls, steps and
handholds should be free of grease, oil and excess dirt. If any safety related defects are
discovered, do not operate the machine until the defect(s) are corrected.
The paver, like all machinery, should be operated and serviced only by responsible
persons, such as an operating engineer or equivalent, who have been properly
instructed and delegated to do so. Read and thoroughly understand all instructions
contained in this manual, the engine manual, and all optional equipment manuals before
attempting to
operate or service the paver.
> Only the operators should be allowed on the operator’s platform when the paver
is in operation.
> Clothing worn by all persons working close to the paver should be fairly tight and
belted. Loose jackets, shirts or pants should never be worn because of the danger of
getting caught in moving parts.
> Be sure all shields and guards are in place and in good condition before starting the
machine.
> Only required personnel at their proper workstations are to be on or near the paver.
> Check all functions of the paver for proper operation. Never attempt to use a
malfunctioning machine.
> Keep all persons clear of augers, hopper wings, conveyors, side arms, power
widening screed ends, and truck hitch when operating the paver.
> Always mount and dismount the paver from the rear, using the walkway, steps and
handrails provided. Never dismount paver to the side, or forward.
> Be sure the direction-speed control levers and all switches are in the “OFF”,
“PAUSE” or neutral positions before starting the machine. Assure that all hands
and feet are clear of moving parts before starting paver.

Loading and Unloading Procedure
The easiest and safest method for unloading a paver is to drive it off onto a loading dock
level with the truck bed. First, remove any separate parts from the truck bed. Then re-
move all tie down equipment, chock blocks and blocks under frame.
If no loading dock is available, a set of ramp boards may be used. Be sure that ramp
board construction and supports are adequate to carry the load. First, remove any sepa-
rate parts from the truck bed. Then, remove all tie down equipment, chock blocks and
blocks under frame.
Use crane with 20-ton capacity to lift machine load. Lifting sling must be properly
adjusted to balance the load and clear all components above the deck. Use only lifting
points that are provided. First, remove any separate parts from the truck bed. Then,
remove all tie down equipment and chock blocks. Lift machine clear of the truck bed and
slowly lower to ground. Never allow anyone near or under the machine until is has safely
reached the ground!
IMPORTANT: If the parts package sitting in the hopper cannot be removed before
starting up the machine, it is very important to avoid operating the conveyor. Damage
could result to the machine and the parts package.

Steering and Speed Controls
The PROPAVER'S steering and speed controls are two control levers, located on top of each
operator's consoles. These levers individually control the forward and reverse direction and speed
of the track drives and can be used to steer the PROPAVER. When both levers are full forward (or
reverse) the PROPAVER will travel in a straight line in that direction. When the left lever is full
forward and the right lever is full reverse, the PROPAVER will fully counter rotate. When the levers
are pushed or pulled from the centered or "neutral" position, the machine will react accordingly.
The farther the levers are actuated, the faster the machine will travel. The PROPAVER may be
stopped without disturbing the lever settings, by depressing the "DRIVE STOP/GO" button. This
will cause the MICROPROCESSOR to shift the machine into the "PAUSED" mode. Instant disen-
gagement of the propel drive system occurs, and the failsafe brakes are applied. Be very careful
when using this feature to reengage the track drive system because when the "DRIVE STOP/GO
button is depressed again, the MICROPROCESSOR will shift the machine into the "ACTIVE"
mode after a 5.0 second countdown. Upon becoming "ACTIVE" the PROPAVER will react sud-
denly, in the same direction as it was traveling previously.

Raising the Hopper Conveyor Bed
The PROPAVER has the unique feature of raising the hopper conveyor bed assembly for
cleaning and maintenance. Procedures such as the conveyor and track drive chain adjust-
ments need to be made with the hopper conveyor bed in the up or maintenance position,
with the safety prop secured.
Never attempt to service or enter under the elevated hopper bed unless the
safety prop is in place and secured.
SERIOUS PERSONAL INJURY OR DEATH COULD RESULT!

This is a momentary switch, releasing the button will cause the AUGER to stop FEED
moving. This button may also be used to override the auger when placed in the
“AUTOMATIC” mode.
AUGER REV: Depressing this button will cause the AUGER to reverse.
The use of this function allows the augers to back feed if material is needed
towards the center of the screed. This is a momentary switch, when the button is REV
released, the conveyor motion stops. NOTE: If the button is depressed and
held for 5 seconds, the augers will lock into the reverse mode. The AU-
GERS REVERSE indicator light will illuminate. This is very helpful when
utilizing the optional DITCH PLATE KIT. Depressing the AUGER FEED
button will clear this setting.
AUGER AUTO/MAN: Depressing this button will cause the AUGER to transfer
the control of the auger to the Automatic Material Conveying System. When
AUTO
this button is depressed, the AUGER AUTOMATIC indicator light will illuminate.
When this indicator light is illuminated, full auger feed is controlled by the auto-
matic feed switch system. The auger automatic feed switches are located on the MAN
end of the HYDRAULIC SCREED EXTENSIONS, and utilize a stainless
steel spring to determine material requirements. Depressing this button

Paving Depth and Width
Before beginning to pave, it is essential that the screed be elevated a distance equal to the de-
sired mat depth plus enough extra height to allow for mat compaction by rolling. This is done by
placing “starting blocks” under the screed. If a finished mat depth of 2 inches is desired, starting
blocks 2 1/4 thick would provide a suitable starting height. The starting blocks should be at least
as long as the width of the screed wear plate, and placed lengthwise with the direction of travel.
Place one block under each end of the
screed. If necessary, place additional blocks beneath the screed extensions. This placement will
provide the screed wear plate with bearing surfaces that are essentially parallel with the grade.
Lower the screed, bringing it to rest upon the starting blocks. With the screed in this position
rotate the screed depth cranks until the screed wear plate is completely flat on the starting blocks
and free rotary travel (no resistance)
of the screed depth cranks is at-
tained. Rotate the screed depth
cranks an additional 1/2 turn clock-
wise.
PAVING WIDTH-To adjust the PROPAVER’S paving width from the standard 8 feet, simply extend the hydraulic screed
extensions to the desired paving width. The screed extension controls are located on each operator’s console and activated by
the buttons on the MEMBRANE SWITCH PANEL. The Paving Width may also be controlled by use of the switches on each
HAND HELD REMOTE.

Crown/Valley Control
The PROPAVER screed is capable of a 3-inch crown and invert. The crown/valley is
adjusted by actuating the ratchet jack located in the center of the screed either down to
put a crown or up to put a valley in the mat. The adjustment dial on the crown/valley
control jack is for reference only, as it will not be exactly correct.
22 ProPaver by Gilcrest
Cleaning (Washdown) System
To ensure proper performance and maximum life of the PROPAVER, it must be cleaned
and washed down with diesel fuel at the end of each workday while the machine is still
warm. Daily clean up of the paver can significantly increase the life of components in the
material handling areas and reduce many mat problems. Abrasive materials, which accu-
mulate in sprocket, bearing, auger and conveyor areas, can break loose and produce
tears in the mat as they pass under the screed. All residual asphalt materials should be
removed from the paver, especially in the material handling areas, and the surfaces
sprayed to "terminate" any remaining residue. This leaves a petroleum film on surfaces
to reduce the potential for material sticking the next time the paver is used.
The clean up and wash down procedure should be performed away from the paving site.
The paver should be driven to the designated areas and all functions shut off.
Diesel fuel is both flammable and slippery, extreme care must be exercised
during the clean up and wash down procedure to avoid fire or personal
injury.

Material Block Off Plates
Every Propaver is equipped with material block off plates that are located on either side of the
hopper frame assembly. These plates may be removed or rotated out of the way when paving
extremely wide widths. Removal of the plates will accommodate greater material flow to the
augers. Care should be taken when removing the plates, due to the possibility of over feeding at
narrow widths.

24 ProPaver by Gilcrest
Screed Heaters
Before beginning to pave with bituminous materials, the screed should be preheated.
This helps to prevent the hot mix from sticking to a cold screed plate, and produces a
smooth, tight mat surface. Preheating should be performed if the machine sets a long
period of time between loads allowing the screed plate to cool. At the beginning of the
day allow 20 minutes for heat up of a cold screed. Shorter periods of time will be suffi-
cient when the screed is sitting on warm material. When heating the screed, the exten-
sions should be retracted full in to insure proper heating of the extension wear plate.
> Never refuel paver with screed heaters lit and operating.
> Never use the wash down system when the screed heaters are lit or operating.
> Do not open propane valves to the screed burners unless flame is present to light the
burners. An accumulation of unburned gas could result in explosion. If screed heaters
should go out for any reason, never attempt to relight until excess propane is ventilated
from the screed burner chamber.
> Do not allow smoking when lighting propane fired screed burners. If screed heaters
should go out for any reason, never attempt to relight until excess propane is ventilated
from the screed burner chamber.
To light the screed heaters, turn the valve on top of the propane tank. Adjust the pres-
sure valve until the gage reads between 6 (six) and 8 (eight) psi. Hold an open flame next
to the holes in one of the burner nozzles and open the burner valve. Repeat the previous
steps to light the opposite burner.

Screed Strike Off Shoes
The Propaver's screed strike-off shoes are located on the end of the screed extensions
and may be used in two different ways. When not paving adjacent of previously paved
areas, the strike-off shoes should be free floating. Loosen the jam nuts on the outermost
hex head bolts, and rotate the bolts counter clockwise until the strike-off shoe will move
easily. Re-tighten the jam nuts to secure the
hex head bolts. Loosen the jam nuts on the
two vertical 5 inch long all thread hex head
bolts, and rotate the bolts clockwise until
maximum vertical movement of the screed
strike-off shoe is available. Re-tighten the jam
nuts to secure the long hex head bolts. The
screed strike-off shoes are now full floating,
and will maintain a positive edge of the mat at
any paving depth.

Adjustable Operator’s Stations
The Propaver 814 is equipped with unique adjustable operator's stations. The machine
can be operated as either a high deck or a low deck. The change can be made in just a
few minutes. To convert from high deck to low deck, remove the operator's platforms
and guardrails from the post pockets. These simply lift out. Remove the uppermost
locking bolt from the operator's station. Rotate the station down until it rests on the deck
of the machine. Replace the previously removed locking bolt in the available aligning
hole in the operator's station and tighten. The steering control levers will need to be
repositioned to operate properly in the low deck position. To adjust the control levers,
pull out on the locking levers, and rotate counterclockwise to loosen. Reposition the
steering control levers to the desired operation position and tighten the side locking
levers. (The locking levers are a ratchet type adjustment.)

OPERATION
The Hand Held Remotes of the Propaver 814 provide control of the screed functions.
The switches in the remotes are toggle type. The switches control the SCREED EXTEN-
SIONS, THE AUGER DRIVE FUNCTIONS, AND THE MAT THICKNESS IF POWER DEPTH
CONTROLS ARE INSTALLED. AN EMERGENCY PAUSE SWITCH IS INSTALLED ON
EACH REMOTE. The following is an overview of the functions of the remotes:
NOTE: The left hand remote controls the left side screed functions, and the right hand
remote controls the right side screed functions. Gilcrest Equipment Company recom-
mends the remotes be removed and stored nightly or during transport to prevent damage.
AUGER DRIVE FUNCTIONS: Provides manual engagement for forward or reverse of the
auger drives. The remote switches will override the auger "AUTOMATIC" setting on the
MEMBRANE SWITCH PANEL.
MAT THICKNESS CONTROL: Provides manual mat thickness control if power depth
control cylinders are installed. Offers the same functionality as the manual buttons on
the membrane switch panel.
PAUSE CONTROL: Depressing the PAUSE switch causes instant disengagement of all
material conveying and propel drive systems. Will also force engine to low idle. NOTE:
THIS FUNCTION WORKS LIKE AN EMERGENCY STOP BUTTON. THE MACHINE CAN
ONLY BE REACTIVATED FROM ONE OF THE MEMBRANE SWITCH PANELS. THE MA-
CHINE CAN NOT BE REACTIVATED FROM THE HAND HELD REMOTES.

INDICATORS
The Membrane Switch Panels on the Propaver 814 are identical on the right and left-hand sides.
These panels offer control of the entire machine. Note the “LED” window in the center of the panel.
Through this window, all operational messages will be displayed, presently “PAUSED” is dis-
played in red. There are eleven indicator lights (red when lit) surrounding the “LED” window. These
indicators will illuminate when that specific corresponding function is engaged.

GAUGE INDICATOR DESCRIPTIONS
Any time the machine ignition switch is turned to the “ON” position, the microprocessor must boot
up. When this happens, the following message will scroll across the “LED” screen: (Propaver
“814” Ver. M3.11- - S3.04) . After this message is complete, the next message seen will be a
flashing “PAUSED”. This means that the machine is presently in the “PAUSED” mode, and is
ready to start the engine. The engine can only be started when the machine is in the “PAUSED”
mode.
The “LED” window will also display operational gauge readings by pushing the “SELECT” button
located on the top, center of the switch panel. The following information will be displayed in a scroll
through fashion when the select button is depressed.
The operational gauge readings can be accessed at any time the ignition switch is in the “ON”
position. Continuing to depress the “SELECT” button can only scroll the information forward. If the
information required is bypassed, continue to depress the “SELECT” button to re-scroll the infor-
mation across the “LED” window.

Any function can be operated from either membrane switch panel at any time. Both left and right
panels are identical. When a button is depressed, a signal is sent to the Microprocessor. In turn,
the Microprocessor interprets the signal and sends voltage to the requested function. A solenoid
is energized which opens a hydraulic valve, causing the requested function to respond. Buttons on
the Membrane switch panels have specific operations, although several of the buttons have mul-
tiple functions. The engine throttle control is automatic. Several of the buttons will have a pro-
grammed effect on the Automatic Engine Throttle Control Listed below are step by step
directions and definitions for each button.
WINGS OUT: Depressing this button will cause the hopper wings to extend. This is a momentary
switch. When the button is released, the wings will cease to move.
WINGS IN: Depressing this button will cause the hopper wings to retract. This is a momentary
switch. When the button is released, the wings will cease to move.
The arrow buttons are a scrolling feature used during the system parameter setup.
SELECT: Depressing will display general gauge readings in a scroll through fashion.
(Fuel, Oil Pressure, RPM, etc.)

DRIVE The
DRIVE GO: This button is the most important on the Membrane Switch Panel.
DRIVE STOP/GO is a multi-function switch that has control over most every
operation of the machine. The Propaver 814 is positioned in the “PAUSED”
GO mode by default. Every time the engine is started, the controls are in the
“PAUSED” mode. Simply, when the DRIVE STOP/GO button is depressed, the
STOP machine either becomes “ACTIVE” or PAUSED”. Depressing the DRIVE STOP/
GO button, when the “”PAUSED” message is displayed in the “LED WINDOW”
will result in engagement of the systems. There will be a scrolled message across the “LED
WINDOW” displaying an immediate countdown from 5.0 seconds until all systems are “AC-
TIVE”. During this countdown, horns will sound, notifying personnel that the machine is about to
move. The “AUTOMATIC ENGINE THROTTLE CONTROL” will be powered to “HIGH” idle
(2800 RPM). The automatic conveyors and augers will be engaged, (If the material conveying
systems have been previously selected to “AUTOMATIC”). The screed vibrator will be engaged,
(If previously activated). The screed will be released from the “AUTOMATIC
SCREED LOCKED” positioned into the “FLOAT” position. The “AUTOMATIC MAT THICK-
NESS CONTROLS” will be engaged, (If so equipped and previously selected). The “FAILSAFE
BRAKES” in the track propel drive system will be disengaged, and the propel drive will be en-
gaged. All systems should now be illuminated and “ACTIVE” displayed in the “LED WINDOW”.
DRIVE DRIVE STOP: Depressing the DRIVE STOP button will immediately disengage
all automatic systems. When the button is depressed, the machines propel drive
GO system is immediately disengaged, and the FAILSAFE BRAKES are applied.
The screed is placed in the “LOCKED”
STOP Position. The screed vibrator is turned off. The conveyors and augers are disen-
gaged. The AUTOMATIC MAT THICKNESS controls are disengaged. (If previ-
ously installed and selected).
The AUTOMATIC ENGINE THROTTLE control first adjusts the engine speed to 2100 RPM for
approximately 15 seconds before adjusting the engine speed to the 1200-RPM low idle setting.
“PAUSED” will be displayed in the “LED WINDOW”.

Truck Hitch
If your PROPAVER is equipped with the tow type truck hitch, the engaging button will be
located on each Membrane Switch Panel. The truck hitch is very helpful in keeping the
truck and paver from separating while loading the hopper with asphalt and causing a spill.
Move the PROPAVER into position behind the
dump truck. Fully extend the hitch arms of the
paver. Instruct the truck driver to back the
dump truck until the rear wheels are within one
inch or so of contacting the rollers on the
oscillating push roller beam of the truck hitch.
Instruct the PROPAVER operator to ease the
machine into contact with the rear tires of the
dump truck. (Using this method, you should
not experience a seam or dent in the mat due
to the dump truck pushing the PROPAVER
screed backwards into the already paved mat).
Retract the hitch arms so the side thrust rollers
come in contact with the sides of the truck
tires. (The tow type truck hitch is floating and oscillating, so minor misalignment should
not be a problem). If the hitch arm wheel rollers are not adjusted properly, adjust them so
that they just clear the inside of the wheel on the truck. (The wheel rollers are three posi-
tion adjustable). The PROPAVER and the truck are now coupled together, begin paving.

Bolt On Screed Extensions
The optional bolt on screed extension kit has been designed to accommodate wider
paving widths, quickly and easily. The kit contains a pair of inboard gearbox driven
screed augers (located in each hydraulic extension), and two- (2) bolt on, eighteen- (18)
inch ironing extensions, with connecting augers. The standard paving width of the
PROPAVER is eight (8) feet. With the hydraulic screed extensions deployed, the maxi-
mum width is thirteen (13) feet. When using the bolt on screed extensions, the minimum
paving width becomes eleven (11) feet, and the maximum paving width becomes sixteen
(16) feet. To install the bolt on extensions, remove the screed extension end strike off
plate by removing the four (4) one
half-inch (1/2") carriage bolts and
the two (2) one half-inch (1/2")
plow bolts. Position the bolt on
extension next to the hydraulically
extendable extension. Disconnect
the electrical connection to the
automatic auger control switch n
the hydraulic screed extension,
and connect the electrical connec-
tion to the automatic auger control
switch in the bolt on extension.
Attach the bolt on extension to the
hydraulic screed extension using
the five- (5) one half (1/2) bolts
supplied with the extension. Re-
attach the screed extension end strike off plate, using the previously removed carriage
and plow bolts. Match the ironing plates on the screed extensions by adjusting the
leveling bolts on the eighteen-inch extensions. Repeat the above steps to attach the
other side.
Another type of bolt on extension is available. This extension is the Lip-Gutter Extension.
The extension operates just like the standard extension, except that it has no drive au-
ger. The extension is adjustable across the eighteen-inch length. A two-inch rise, four
inch, up to a six-inch rise can be manually adjusted in the extension. A two-inch down-
ward taper can also be adjusted. This option can be utilized when a curb or berm is
required.

function. The screed must also always be in the “FLOAT” position. If the screed is not in
the “FLOAT” position, or the “MAT THICKNESS AUTO” indicators are not illuminated, the
automation will not function. If the machine is not equipped with screed automation, and
the “MAT THICKNESS AUTO” indicators are illuminated, then the power depth controls
will not function.
As screed automation is a miniature computer, do not pressure wash the control boxes

Loading Asphalt from a Truck
> Only the operators should be allowed on the operator's platform when the
paver is in operation.
> Clothing worn by all persons working close to the paver should be fairly tight and
belted. Loose jackets, shirts or pants should never be worn due to the danger of getting
caught in moving parts.
> Be sure all shields and guards are in place and in good condition before starting the machine.
> Be sure the direction-speed control levers and all switches are in the "OFF", "PAUSE"
or neutral positions before starting the machine. Assure that all hands and feet are clear
of moving parts before starting paver.
> Make sure everyone is clear of the paver before starting so they cannot be struck by or
caught in moving parts.
> Never allow horseplay near the paver when it is in operation or being serviced.
Move the PROPAVER into position behind the dump truck. Instruct the truck driver to
back the dump truck until the rear wheels are within one inch or so of contacting the
rollers on the oscillating push roller beam of the machine. Instruct the PROPAVER operator
to ease the machine into contact with the rear tires of the dump truck. (Using this
method, you should not experience a seam or dent in the mat due to the dump truck
pushing the PROPAVER screed backwards into the already paved mat). Signal the dump
truck driver to begin to dump into the hopper and start the conveyor bed. (It is suggested
to turn the conveyor bed to
the "AUTOMATIC " mode, so
that the conveyor will shut
off automatically when the
hopper bed is full to capac-
ity). At this point, signal the
truck driver to lower the
dump truck bed. On reason-
ably smooth terrain, the
PROPAVER may push the
dump truck and feed con-
tinuously from the truck bed
to the hopper, to the screed,
as the asphalt is spread.
NOTE: The truck driver should hold slight pressure on the truck brakes to prevent sepa-
ration from the PROPAVER, causing a spill. In close quarters, or on uneven terrain, this
may not be practical.
Read and thoroughly understand all instructions contained in this section. Paver adjustments and
servicing should be performed only by responsible persons who have been properly instructed
and delegated to do so.
> Before attempting to service, attach or remove any part or assembly on the paver, make certain
that all controls and switches are in the "OFF" or "NEUTRAL" position, that the hopper wings are
lowered, the screed is down or otherwise secured, and that the engine is shut off unless otherwise
instructed.
> Before attempting any service procedures on the paver, remove the ignition key to prevent
unexpected starting by other personnel.
> Always mount and dismount the paver from the rear, using the walkway, steps and handrails
provided. Never dismount paver to the side, or forward.
> Never move the machine with the hopper bed lifted in the "UP" or servicing position, this will
make the paver heavy on the rear, and very hard to control.
> Refuel the paver only when the engine has been shut off. Do not permit sparks, open flames or
smoking within 50 feet of paver when refueling. Never refuel paver with screed heaters lit and
operating.
> Never allow horseplay near the paver when it is in operation or being serviced.
> Escaping hydraulic fluid under pressure can have sufficient force to penetrate the skin, causing
serious personal injury. Before disconnecting any hydraulic lines, be sure to relieve all pressure.
Before applying pressure to a system, be sure all connections are tight and that lines, tubes and
hoses are not damaged. Fluid escaping from a very small hole can be almost invisible. Use a
piece of cardboard or wood, rather than hands, to search for suspected leaks.
> If injured by escaping fluid, see a doctor at once. Serious infection or reaction can develop if
proper medical treatment is not administered immediately.
> Refill fluids and lubricants only when the engine is stopped or idling slowly.
Ø Never use the wash down system when the screed heaters are lit or operating. Allow
screed heaters to cool at least (ten) 10 minutes before attempting to wash down the screed.
> Never attempt to service or enter under the elevated hopper bed unless the safety prop is in
place and secured. SERIOUS PERSONAL INJURY OR DEATH COULD RESULT!
> Do not allow smoking or use open flame when checking the electrolyte level in the battery. An
explosion could result. If skin or eyes are exposed flush immediately with water and see a doctor.
44 ProPaver by Gilcrest
> Do not attempt service or repairs you don't understand or cannot perform competently.
> If any safety related defects are discovered, inform the operator to shut the machine down and
correct the defect.
To maintain optimum performance and maximum component life, is very important to keep the
track drive chains properly adjusted. The PROPAVER uses a spring tension adjusting mecha-
nism. As the track drive chain wears, it is necessary to reset the spring tension.
> Before attempting any service procedures on the paver, remove the ignition key to
prevent unexpected starting by other personnel.
> Never attempt to service or enter under the elevated hopper bed unless the safety
prop is in place and secured. SERIOUS PERSONAL INJURY OR DEATH COULD RESULT!
Remove the track drive chain adjustment access cover. Loosen the hex jam nut on the adjustment
bolt. Rotate the track drive adjusting rod
until a measurement of 1/4 inch of the
track spring guide is extended into the
adjusting cavity of the track drive frame.
Retighten the hex jam nut. The spring
tension has now been returned to the
original factory setting. Replace the
track drive chain adjustment access
cover. Repeat the above steps to adjust
the opposite track drive chain

General Maintenance
The PROPAVER Self Propelled paver/finisher is a high quality product designed to provide many
years of reliable operation if properly maintained. The following information will aid in proper maintenance.
1) During the first few hours/days of operation with a new machine, check fasteners (bolts, nuts, etc.)
on high vibration areas to ensure tightness. Occasionally these will become loose while a machine
is starting up. Tighten any loose fasteners you might find. This should not continue after ten (10)
to twenty (20) hours of operation. (Track roller mounting bolts, Hopper Wing mounting bolts, etc.)
2) Replace fluids and filters as recommended in the Power Unit Maintenance and Lubrication Points sections.
