BASIC CLIMATE CHANGE PRINCIPLES AND CONCEPTS

AND THEIR EFFECT ON HEALTH
Introduction

Climate change refers to significant and lasting changes in the Earth's climate,
including global warming and its related effects. This phenomenon is primarily
driven by human activities, such as the burning of fossil fuels, deforestation, and
industrial processes, leading to an increase in greenhouse gases in the
atmosphere. Understanding climate change is crucial for young students, as it
directly impacts their future. This lesson plan aims to educate pupils on the basic
principles and concepts of climate change and how it affects health, while also
empowering them to take real-life actions to mitigate its effects.

Objectives

1. To introduce pupils to the fundamental concepts of climate change.

2. To explain the causes and consequences of climate change, focusing on its
impact on health.
3. To engage pupils in activities that promote awareness and actions to combat
climate change.
4. To encourage pupils to develop sustainable habits and practices.

Basic Principles and Concepts of Climate Change

1. Greenhouse Gases (GHGs): Understand the role of GHGs (such as carbon

dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide) in trapping heat in the Earth's
atmosphere, leading to global warming.
2. Global Warming: Learn about the rise in Earth's average temperature due
to increased GHGs.
3. Climate vs. Weather: Differentiate between climate (long-term patterns) and
weather (short-term conditions).
4. Human Activities: Identify human activities that contribute to climate
change, including burning fossil fuels, deforestation, and industrial
processes.
5. Effects on Health: Discuss how climate change affects human health
through increased heatwaves, poor air quality, extreme weather events, and
the spread of diseases.
Activities

Activity 1: Understanding the Greenhouse Effect

Objective: Explain the greenhouse effect and its role in climate change.

Materials: Clear container, plastic wrap, thermometer, lamp with an incandescent

bulb.

Steps:

1. Place the thermometer inside the clear container.

2. Cover the container with plastic wrap.
3. Place the lamp above the container and turn it on.
4. Observe and record the temperature changes over 10 minutes.
5. Discuss how the plastic wrap simulates the greenhouse gases trapping heat
in the Earth's atmosphere.

Discussion Questions:

 What role does the plastic wrap play in this experiment?

 How does this relate to the greenhouse gases in our atmosphere?

Activity 2: Mapping Climate Change Effects on Health

Objective: Identify and visualize the health impacts of climate change.

Materials: World map, markers, health impact icons (heatwaves, vector-borne

diseases, respiratory issues, etc.).

Steps:

1. Discuss different health impacts of climate change (e.g., heat-related

illnesses, spread of diseases, respiratory problems).
2. Use markers to indicate regions on the world map where these impacts are
most prevalent.
3. Place health impact icons on the corresponding regions.
4. Discuss why certain regions are more affected than others.

Discussion Questions:

 What health issues are most common in your region?

 How can local communities mitigate these health impacts?

Activity 3: Personal and Community Action Plans

Objective: Develop practical strategies to combat climate change at individual and

community levels.

Materials: Paper, pens, internet access for research.

Steps:

1. Divide participants into small groups.

2. Each group researches and lists actions that individuals and communities
can take to reduce their carbon footprint.
3. Groups create action plans and present them to the class.

Discussion Questions:

 What are some simple changes you can make in your daily life to reduce
your carbon footprint?
 How can communities come together to address climate change?

Specific Activities for Pupils

1. Energy Conservation Project

 Activity: Conduct an energy audit at home or school. Identify ways to

conserve energy, such as turning off lights when not in use, using energy-
efficient appliances, and reducing water heating costs.
 Objective: Reduce energy consumption and lower greenhouse gas
emissions.

2. Tree Planting and Gardening

 Activity: Organize a tree-planting event or start a school garden. Educate

pupils on the importance of trees in absorbing carbon dioxide and providing
oxygen.
 Objective: Increase green cover and promote carbon sequestration.

3. Waste Reduction Campaign

 Activity: Initiate a recycling program in school. Teach pupils how to

segregate waste and the benefits of recycling paper, plastic, and metals.
 Objective: Reduce waste sent to landfills and lower methane emissions from
waste decomposition.

4. Climate Change Awareness Day

 Activity: Host a climate change awareness day with presentations, posters,

and skits by pupils. Discuss the impact of climate change on health and the
environment.
 Objective: Raise awareness and educate the school community about
climate change.

5. Healthy and Sustainable Eating

 Activity: Encourage pupils to adopt a diet that includes more plant-based

foods and less meat. Discuss the environmental impact of meat production.
 Objective: Reduce the carbon footprint associated with food production and
promote healthier eating habits.
Conclusion

Educating pupils about climate change is essential for fostering a generation that
is aware of and committed to addressing this global challenge. By understanding
the basic principles of climate change and its effects on health, pupils can be
motivated to take meaningful actions. The activities outlined provide practical
ways for students to contribute to mitigating climate change, emphasizing the
importance of individual and collective efforts in creating a sustainable future.
