OBSERVATION OF TRIALS (30 marks)

You are required to maintain a record of the various stages observed on different days in the
court. The assessment shall be done on the basis of record of the observations made in the
Internship Diary.

Tasks expected
1. Observation of various stages –
a) Framing of charges
b) Examination-in-Chief
c) Cross-examination
d) Final Arguments
2. Record the observations in the Internship Diary/Report as per the format provided.

INTERVIEWING TECHNIQUES, PRE-TRIAL PREPARATION AND


INTERNSHIP DIARY (30 marks)
You are expected to intern with at least one trial advocate/lawyer’s office/legal aid office/law
firm during the course of this academic year. During the internship, you are expected to perform
certain tasks as mentioned below. The same has to be recorded in the Internship Diary/Report.
The Internship diary should contain an everyday factual logof the internship experience.

Tasks expected
1. Intern with a practicing Trial Advocate/Lawyer’s Office/Legal Aid Office
2. Read at least 4 ongoing case files –
a. comprehend how files are prepared and maintained
b. learn methods and techniques to maintain database and records
3. Conduct legal research in minimum two fresh or ongoing cases
4. Observe client interviews/counselling in at least two fresh or ongoing cases with the
permission of the lawyer
5. Record of the day-to-day observations in Internship Diary

Assessment
1. Record of proceedings from interviewing sessions of clients at the Lawyer’s Office/Legal
Aid Office (10 marks)
2. Record of the preparation of documents and court papers and the procedure for the filing
of the cases at least for one case (5 marks)
3. Record of everyday observation during the internship (15 marks)

Format of recording the observations is attached herewith as Annexure B.

Note:
a) If you were conducting research for an ongoing case, make record of it without the

procedure for any fresh filing done in any other case or filing of a fresh case.

may include observations on how lawyers and clients interact, role played by the court staff, any
humorous incident inside or outside the courtrooms, your boss’ interaction with other lawyers,
