Muhammad Yamin

Prof. Mr. Mohammad Yamin, S.H was a writer, historian, humanist, politician, and a
lawyer who was honored as a hero of Indonesia. He is one of the pioneers of Indonesian
modern poetry and the pioneer of the Youth Pledge as well as the "creator of Indonesian
images" which influenced the history of Indonesian unity. Muhammad Yamin was born on 24th
august 1903 in Sawahlunto, sumatera barat. He is the son of Usman Baginda Khatib and Siti
Saadah. His dad had 16 children and 5 wives. Muhammad yamin had primary school on
Hollandsch-inlandsche school (HIS), palembang, then proceed to Algemeene Middelbare
School (AMS) Yogyakarta. At AMS Yogyakarta, he began to study ancient history and various
languages such as Greek, Latin, and Kaei. But after graduating, he had to abandon his intention
to continue his education in Leiden, Holland after his father died. He had studied at the
Rechtshogeschool te Batavia (High School of Law in Jakarta, which later became the Faculty of
Law at the University of Indonesia), and later succeeded in obtaining a Meester in de Rechten
(Bachelor of Law) degree in 1932.

Although Yamin is intelligent, he has a reputation for exaggerating his achievements and
loves to argue. Thamrin called him an "eternal breaker" because of his confrontational attitude
in the Volksraad. In addition to his false claim to be the originator of the concept of Pancasila in
his speech at BPUPK on 29 May 1945. Indonesia's first vice president, Mohammad Hatta called
Yamin 'cunning'.
Prof. Mr. Soenario: “About the birthday of Pancasila, is it true that it is on 1 June 1945?
Because in Prof. Yamin’s book, the Preparatory Manuscript for the Drafting of the 1945
Constitution, Yamin had delivered a speech before 1 June. among other things, its content was
similar to Pancasila.”
Mohammad Hatta: “Not true. Yamin is a bit cunning. That speech was spoken at the
Small Committee meeting. Bung Karno was the only one who explicitly proposed a grondslag
philosophy for the state to be formed; namely, the five precepts called Pancasila, only the order
of principle of belief in God is below.”
Prof. Mr. Sunario: “Bung Karno said that he was one of the diggers of Pancasila. I guess
this is true.”
Mohammad Hatta: “Maybe, but what is clear is that Bung Karno was inspired a lot. For
example, the principle of belief in God from the PSII is the principle of the party's struggle.”

M. Yamin's career in politics had begun when he was appointed as the chairman of the
Jong Sumatra Bond from 1926 to 1928. After that, in 1931, he joined the Indonesian Party. But
the party was dissolved. His political career had continued when M. Yamin founded the
Indonesian People's Movement party with Adam Malik, Wilipo, and Amir Syarifudin. M. Yamin
was also a member of the BPUPKI and a member of the Nine Committees which finally
succeeded in formulating the Jakarta Charter. The Jakarta Charter is the forerunner and the
basis for the formation of the 1945 Constitution and Pancasila. It is recorded that M. Yamin has
also been appointed as a member of the Central Indonesian National Committee.

After Indonesia's independence, Yamin held many important positions in the country,
including being a member of the DPR since 1950, Minister of Justice (1951-1952), Minister of
Teaching, Education and Culture (1953-1955), Minister of Social and Cultural Affairs (1959-
1960), Chairman of the National Designers' Council (1962), and Chairman of the Supervisory
Board of the Intermediary IKBN (1961-1962).

M. Yamin died on October 17, 1962. He died in Jakarta and was buried in the village of
Talawi, Sawahlunto Regency, West Sumatra. He had died when he served as Minister of
Information before the age of 60. M. Yamin have been awarded the title of a national hero in
1973 by the Decree of the President of the Republic of Indonesia No. 088/TK/1973.
