Understanding Arithmetic Sequences

Definition: An arithmetic sequence is a list of numbers in which each term

after the first is obtained by adding a constant, called the common
difference, to the preceding one.

Example: 2, 5, 8, 11, 14, ... is an arithmetic sequence with a common

difference of 3.

Practice Problems

I. Identify the Common Difference Determine the common difference for

each arithmetic sequence.

1. 3, 7, 11, 15, ...

2. -5, -2, 1, 4, ...
3. 12, 9, 6, 3, ...
4. 0.5, 1, 1.5, 2, ...

II. Finding the Next Terms Write the next three terms for each arithmetic
sequence.

1. 2, 9, 16, ...
2. -4, -1, 2, ...
3. 100, 95, 90, ...
4. 1/2, 1, 3/2, ...

III. Finding Missing Terms Find the missing terms in each arithmetic
sequence.

1. _, 7, 12, _
2. -3, _, 5, ...
3. 20, _, _, 5
4. 1/4, _, 3/4, ...
IV. Using the Formula The nth term of an arithmetic sequence can be
found using the formula: a_n = a_1 + (n - 1)d where:

a_n is the nth term

a_1 is the first term
n is the number of the term
d is the common difference

Use the formula to find the indicated term for each arithmetic sequence.

1. Find the 10th term of 3, 8, 13, ...

2. Find the 20th term of -2, 1, 4, ...
3. Find the 50th term of 100, 97, 94, ...

V. Word Problems

1. A gym membership costs $30 to join and $25 per month. Write an
arithmetic sequence to represent the total cost for the first six months.
2. A ball is dropped from a height of 10 meters. On each bounce, it
rebounds to 80% of its previous height. Write an arithmetic sequence to
represent the heights of the first four bounces.

Challenge Problem

Find the sum of the first 50 terms of the arithmetic sequence: 2, 7, 12, 17, ...
