METHOD STATEMENT FOR CEMENT RENDERING

PROCEDURE
 The floor must be cleaned well before the cement rendering is started.
 The cement mortar remains on the floor surface and other loose materials should be
removed from the concrete surface using the chipping hammer or crowbars
 The floor is chipped using the crow hammers to get the required roughness of the
surface, and is cleaned well with water.
 5mm thick glass strips should be laid on the surface at a 200mm distance from all four
sides of the walls. Also a glass strip should be kept right in the middle of the room.
After the completion of the rendering work, glass strip should be visible. Top levels of
the rendering and the glass strip should be the same.
 For corridors, glass strips should be laid at a distance of 150mm from either side of
the walls. A glass strip should also be kept in between two columns of the corridor
with 2 rooms distance.
 First of all, cement skirting should be done at a height of 100mm from the floor finish
level and should have a thickness of 15mm.
 Cement mortar with a cement-sand ratio of 1:4 is used
 Before applying the cement-sand mortar, cement powder mixed with a bonding agent
should be applied on top of the concrete surface in order to provide the maximum
bonding between the concreted surface and the cement mortar.
 However, as soon as the cement-bonding agent mix was applied and before it dries,
the cement-sand mortar should be applied on top of it. This would ensure maximum
bonding between the concrete surface and the cement-sand mortar.
 The applied cement-sand mortar should be compacted well.
 Cement paste is applied with a thickness of 3mm on the cement-sand mortar when it
achieves the required dryness.
 Using the masonry finishing handles, the floor surface is finished smoothly.
 Colour variations should be avoided as much as possible. To avoid the colour
variation, pigment should be applied.
 Curing should be done carefully in order to avoid any thermal cracks appearing.
 Water is poured on the rendered surface and polythene is laid on top of it, to avoid
evaporation.
 Curing period should be no less than 4 days.
 For dropped areas, curing is done by ponding the area.
 After a period of 2 weeks, hollowness of the surface should be checked by the QA
officer.
 If any hollowness is observed, then that area is removed using grinders, to avoid the
effect of vibration to other areas.
