GRAMMAR EXERCISES
TENSES
Simple Present Tense : When the action happens regularly or in the present time. We
use Simple Present tense to talk of scientific facts and universal facts or truths. Look for
words like daily, always, regularly, or often in sentences to identify the Simple Present
tense sentences.
A few examples are :
1. We celebrate Christmas every December.
2. I sleep at 10 pm daily.
3. I eat eggs for breakfast.
Simple Past Tense : This is used when we talk of the action that happened in the past.
Here we change the Verb in its past form.
Verbs are of two types : Regular and Irregular Verbs
1. Regular Verbs refer to the verbs that change slightly by adding ed/d in the past forms.
Examples include :
Walk- Walked
Talk-Talked
Jump-Jumped
Dance-Danced
2. Irregular Verbs refer to the verbs that completely change their shape and become a
new word when you convert it to past form.
Examples are:
Sing- Sang
Run-Ran

A few examples are :

Simple Future Tense : We use this when talking of any action that is yet to happen in
the future. The form is to use shall/ will before the verb. We usually use Shall before I /
We when we talk of any action that we will use soon.
A few examples are :
1. We will go to school tomorrow.
2. Seema will sing at the annual day function in school next month.
3. I shall write the poem next week.
CONTINUOUS TENSE
1. Present Continuous Tense: This refers to the action happening right now. So, we use
the verb form as:
To be form of the verb+ verb +ing. Look for words like at present, right now, currently
Examples :
1. I am writing a letter.
2. She is eating pizza right now.
3. We are going to the market at present.
Past Continuous
This talks of an event that happened in the past for some time and continued for some
time. At the time of this event, another action will also be happening simultaneously.
Usually, you will find the use of words like ‘While’, or ‘When’ in these sentences.
The form is “To be (in the past tense as per the subject) +verb +ing
Examples :
1. I was sleeping when the door bell rang.
2. They were singing on the stage when the curtain fell.
3. While she was eating, she read a book.
Future Continuous
This is when the event will happen in the future days and will continue for some time
too.
Notice the use of ‘by this time tomorrow’ or ‘during’ in these sentences.
Examples :
1. I will be visiting the temple during the trip next year.
2. By this time tomorrow, we will be sleeping.

Perfect Tenses
1. Present Perfect
This talks of the event that happened in the past at a specific time and finished too. The
effect of this action is even now present and this makes it different from Simple Past.
Has/have +past participle form of the verb
Let us now look at more examples of regular and irregular verbs and how we use them
in the Simple present and past tense.

Past Perfect Tense
When two events happen in the past, we use Past Perfect tense for the action that hap-
pens earlier. For the second action, we use Simple past tense.

1. The traain had left by the time to reached the station.
2. I had met him before the party.

Future Perfect
When we talk of an event beginning in the future and going on for some time and end
in the future itself, we use Future perfect.
Verb form :
Will/ shall +have/has+ past participle form of the verb
Examples :
1. My school will have participated in the event next month by the 12th.
2. We will have graduated from college in 2022.
PERFECT CONTINUOUS
Present Perfect Continuous
When we talk of an event that began in the past and continuing even now we talk of the
Present perfect continuous tense.
The format is : has/have +been +verb in the present participle form
Examples :
1. Steve has been singing for over two hours now.
2. Mary has been working since the morning.
Past Perfect Continuous
We use Past perfect continuous when we talk of events that began in the past and con-
tinued in the past for some time and ended in the past itself. The format is : had+been
+continuous form of the verb
Examples :
1. She had been working in the company for 10 years before she left the job.
2. Dev had been building the house since 2000 before he broke his leg,
Future Perfect Continuous
When we talk of an event that will happen in the future for some time and continue for
some time, we use Future Perfect Continuous tense.
Format is : will+has/have+been +verb+ing
Examples :
1. On Friday, I will have been eating a healthy diet for a month.
2. At 10 pm, Sita will have been sleeping for over five hours.

What is an Article?
An Article is a word that modifies or describes the noun. It is used before the noun to
show whether it refers to something specific or not.
Types of Articles:
1. Indefinite Article – A /An
• A: Used before consonant sound words and when you want to point to a single thing.
• Used before things that start with words starting with b, c, d, g, or more.
Examples : A ball, a chicken, a dog
• An : Used before vowel sound words and when you want to point to a single thing.
• Used before vowel sounds like a, e, o, i, u.
Examples : An onion, an egg, an owl, and more
2. Definite Article – The
• Used for specific things
• Not used before general things or even before people’s names
• Used before Superlative adjective
