Introduction (T308531-001-0E)

This is the service manual for the APC300 control system, the mechatronics brain of KATO hydraulic excavators.
The APC controller includes a microprocessor in its processing unit that optimizes pump operation and controls the
engine in order to obtain the most economical output in response to varying loads while the excavator is in operation. It
also uses auto-slow control and other functions in order to achieve low fuel consumption, low noise, high working
efficiency and excellent control response.
The APC300 system also runs self diagnostics that constantly monitor the system's functions. If it encounters any
abnormality, it displays an error message to alert the user and stores service and malfunction data to enable efficient
servicing and high reliability. However, the APC300 system cannot be expected to operate at full efficiency without
proper aftercare by a competent specialist technician.
Accordingly, this manual was put together as a technical guide for the technician who services the APC300 system. In
order to service the APC300 system according to correct procedures, the technician must read both this manual and the
machine instruction manual thoroughly in order to gain an in-depth understanding of the advanced system of the APC
controller, and must also learn specialized techniques and strictly observe the precautions.

・ The APC controller is precisely assembled from many electronic components. The cover
should be removed and connectors disconnected only when an error code giving details of a
malfunction calls for you to do so.
・ Before you remove the cover or disconnect a connector from the APC controller, stop the
engine and turn the key to OFF.
・ Only specialist technicians with advanced knowledge should attempt to service the APC
controller.
・ The APC controller should be serviced in an area with little dust and low humidity. The
presence of dust or moisture in the electronic circuits could cause serious malfunctions.
・ If you have any questions related to the information covered in this manual, please consult the
service representative at your authorised KATO dealer.

1. Overview of the APC300 system (T308531-004-0E)

1-1 Glossary (T308531-005-1E)

The meanings of the main terms that appear in the text are as follows.
・ ACCL
Accelerator value
Calculated by SPAD, it is used as a reference value for NCES.

・ ADJUST MODE
The mode that provides necessary information for adjustments to the machine and the APC controller. The necessary
information appears on the display.

・ AES: Actual Engine Speed

The actual engine speed in revolutions per minute.

・ CLDP: Current Level for Driving Proportional electromagnetic control valve

The drive current that is output by the controller to drive the proportional electromagnetic control valves.

・ ECU: Electronic Control Unit

The electronic control unit for the engine.

・ E2PROM
A type of ROM to which data can be written and read. E2PROM is used to store data such as the initial adjustment
values for the APC300 system. The data can then be retrieved when it is needed.
Data stored in E2PROM is not lost when the APC300 system power is turned off.

・ ERROR code No.

A code number that identifies errors that have occurred in the APC300 system.

・ FCLP: Feedback Current Level for Proportional electromagnetic control valve

The feedback current in a proportional electromagnetic control valve circuit. The amount of feedback current is
measured by the controller.

・ H-IDL: High Idle

The set maximum speed for the engine when there is no load.

-1-

@309551_APC300.indb 1 2019/12/25 21:17:52

・ LATELY ERROR
The details of the currently occurring errors. Up to five high-priority errors are displayed in the order of their code
numbers.

・ L-IDL: Low Idle

The set minimum speed for the engine when there is no load.

・ NCES: No-load Controlled Engine Speed

The target speed for the engine when there is no load. This is used as a reference value for RCES.

・ PAST ERROR
The details of errors that occurred previously. Up to eight errors are displayed in the order of oldest to newest.

・ PPSP: Pump Power Shift Pressure

The base pressure for the pump power shift of a proportional electromagnetic control valve based on the CLDP
value.

・ RAM
Memory that can be freely written and read. In the APC300 system, RAM is used to store data from the various
sensors for retrieval whenever needed. However, any data stored in RAM is lost when the APC300 system power is
turned off.

・ RCES: Rated Controlled Engine Speed

The controlled engine speed for each power mode. The controlled engine speed varies according to the position of
the accelerator dial.

・ ROM
Memory from which data can only be read. The code number of a ROM differs according to the data that is stored
in the ROM. The operation of the APC300 system is governed by the data stored in ROM.

・ SPAD: Set Position of Accelerator Dial

The signal value that indicates the set position of the accelerator dial.

・ VESS: Voltage of Engine Speed Sensor

The output voltage of the speed sensor that measures the actual engine speed.

-2-

@309551_APC300.indb 2 2019/12/25 21:17:52

・ Auto-slow control system
A control system that automatically slows the engine speed to the specified auto-slow rpm, whenever operations are
stopped (whenever all control levers are in the neutral position), regardless of the accelerator dial position. This
reduces fuel consumption and noise.
When operations are restarted (control lever is operated), the engine speed is automatically and quickly restored to
the rpm corresponding to the accelerator dial position.
However, the auto-slow control system will not function unless the accelerator dial is set to an rpm that is higher than
the auto-slow rpm and the auto-slow mode is specified.
The auto-slow rpm can be selected from three preset rpm modes.

・ High power system

This system boosts digging power for ten seconds to increase working performance. When the high power switch on
the right control lever (the boom/bucket control lever) is pressed, this system operates for not more than ten seconds,
providing high digging strength.

・ Power mode
The power mode refers to the following three operating modes, which allows selecting the mode best suited to the
given operating conditions or operating objectives.
(1) All-round mode
General purpose mode appropriate for general operations, which offers a good balance between productivity and
fuel economy.
(2) Pro mode
Productivity mode appropriate for experienced operators.
(3) Eco mode
Economical mode that prioritizes fuel economy.

・ Automatic warming-up system

This system automatically warms the engine. When the temperature of the engine coolant is low (50°C/122°F or
lower), this system operates as soon as the engine is started. The effect of this system is to increase the engine speed
to the specified speed (medium) regardless of the position of the accelerator dial. The duration for which this system
operates is determined automatically according to the temperature of the engine coolant when the engine starts.

・ Proportional electromagnetic control valve

A reducing solenoid valve that controls the output of the pump according to the amount of current output by the
APC controller in response to the load on the machine and the setting of the power mode.

・ One-touch slow control system

A control system that reduces the engine speed to low idle if the quick accelerator switch on the right control lever (the
boom/bucket control lever) is pressed while the one-touch slow mode is set.
When the quick accelerator switch is pressed again, the engine speed quickly reverts to that set by the accelerator
dial.

If there are less than five active errors, "E00" appears in
the remaining lines.

PAST …… Records up to eight errors that occurred in the past and

displays the error codes in chronological order,
numbered from 1 to 8, with the oldest error first.

Error codes in the LATELY list are recorded in the PAST list as soon as they are cancelled.
If eight errors are already displayed in the PAST list, the newly cancelled error appears in the eighth
position and the error code that was in the eighth position is displayed in the seventh position, and so
on, until the error code displayed in the first position is deleted. Errors are transferred from the
LATELY list to the PAST list, displayed in order of occurrence, and recorded even when the power is
OFF.

(5) Selecting "ECU ERROR"

Selecting "ECU ERROR" displays both currently active and past
ECU errors, along with the date and time they occurred.
NOTE
This functions in the same manner as for APC errors.
