Explain the Context, Content, Processes and
Consequences of Socialization.

Introduction.

Aristotle a Greek philosopher said, “Man is by nature a social animal; an

individual who is unsocial naturally and not accidentally is either beneath our notice or
more than human. Society is something that precedes the individual. “Man cannot live
alone.”
This famous quote will make you realize that the process of socialization is a
key factor in the life of humans. Socialization is important because it helps in the
development of personality and community roles. You will learn more about
socialization in this module.

Objectives.

Most Essential Learning Competency: Explain the context, content,

processes and consequences of socialization.

1. Explain the meaning and types of socialization and its context in the social group.
2. Discuss how socialization develops the identity of an individual.
3. Value the importance of socialization.

Vocabulary List.

Socialization - the process of learning to behave in a way that is acceptable to society.

Identity - the distinguishing character or personality of an individual.

Pre-Test. FACT or BLUFF. Write the word FACT if the statement/question is true,
and BLUFF if it is not.

_____2. One needs to socialize in order not to be lonely.
_____3. Playing is a form of socialization.
_____4. Man is not a social animal.
_____5. “No Man is an Island.” This means that we need one another to live.

Lesson Proper.
Man is a social being. When man is referred to a social being, it means a being
who lives and conducts activity in social relationship differently from natural being.
Man lives in the society unlike the other living matters. In sociology, socialization is
the process of internalizing the norms and ideologies of society. Socialization
encompasses both learning and teaching and is thus "the means by which social and
cultural continuity are attained". Socialization is strongly connected to developmental

1
psychology. It is a continuing process whereby an individual acquires a personal
identity and learns the norms, values, behavior, and social skills appropriate to his or
her social position. It is a learning process that begins shortly after birth. Early
childhood is the period of the most intense and the most crucial socialization. It is then
that we acquire language and learn the fundamentals of our culture. It is also when
much of our personality takes shape. Socialization is a process that introduces people
to social norms and customs. This process helps individuals function well in society,
and, in turn, helps society run smoothly. Family members, teachers, religious
leaders, and peers all play roles in a person's socialization. Through socialization one
learns the culture's language, their role in life, and what is expected from them.
Socialization is a very important process in the forming of personality. Without it a
person will develop different physical and mental disabilities. Socialization is a very
important life process.
Sociologists recognize five types/stages of socialization: Primary socialization
takes place from birth through adolescence, and secondary socialization continues
throughout one's life. Primary socialization occurs early in a child's life and is primarily
due to the influence of family and close friends. Through primary socialization, a child
learns basic societal norms and customs. Toilet training is an example of primary
socialization.
Adult socialization may occur whenever people find themselves in new
circumstances, especially those in which they interact with individuals whose norms
or customs differ from theirs. Secondary socialization occurs throughout our lives as
we encounter groups and situations that were not part of our primary socialization
experience. This might include a college experience, where many people interact with
members of different populations and learn new norms, values, and behaviors.
Secondary socialization also takes place in the workplace or while traveling
somewhere new. As we learn about unfamiliar places and adapt to them, we
experience secondary socialization. It is the process by which individuals learn their
culture and learn to live according to the norms of their society. Through socialization,
we learn how to perceive our world, gain a sense of our own identity, and discover
how to interact appropriately with other. It makes an individual more confident.
Socialization ensures that we have a process through which the norms and
customs of society are transmitted. It teaches people what is expected of them in a
particular group or situation. The process also helps individuals develop a conscience
aligned with social norms and prepares them to perform various roles. Meanwhile,
group socialization occurs throughout all stages of life. For example, peer groups
influence how one speaks and dresses. During childhood and adolescence, this tends
to break down along gender lines. It is common to see groups of children of either
gender wearing the same hair and clothing styles.
Professional or Developmental Socialization. It is a type of socialization
which involves a learning process wherein the focus in on developing our social skills.
Example: A shy senior high school student starts to teach English to new freshmen
students in order to develop verbal communication, is known as developmental
socialization. In this type, new learning is added to and blended with old in a relatively

2
smooth and continuous process of development. This type of socialization occurs
during adulthood. This type of socialization is dependent on the primary and
anticipatory socialization. In the early two stages an individual has acquired the skills,
developed his attitude and established the goals for future, which have prepared him
for the position which he is likely to hold as an adult. As an adult individual is
encountered with new situations and roles such as, marriage, job, and employee or
employer, which will require new expectation and obligations. In this stage new
learning combines with old to continue the process of developmental or professional.
Anticipatory socialization is the process facilitated by social interactions, in
which non-group-members learn to take on the values and standards of groups that
they aspire to join, so as to ease their entry into the group and help them interact
competently once they have been accepted by it. Anticipatory socialization is
beneficial in that it lets you try out the role before you commit to it, makes it easier for
you to transition into the new role, and facilitates your movement into the new role.
This stage occurs in between the childhood and adulthood. Adolescence begins to
establish independence from their parents. They not only learn their immediate group
culture but also learn the culture of a group which they are expecting to join in future.
Re-Socialization in this type of socialization sometimes when an individual
changes his group and become a part of new group he has to abandon his old way of
life. Such situations compel an individual to abandon the old values, norms and beliefs.
To adjust in a new group, he has to learn the values norms and beliefs of new group.
The process of learning a new way of life is called re-socialization.
Also, we make ourselves more visible to society and hence people recognize
us. Thus, socialization helps in building one’s identity. The role of socialization is to
acquaint individuals with the norms of a given social group or society. It is also
important for adults who join new social groups. Broadly defined, it is the process of
transferring norms, values, beliefs, and behaviors to future group members. However,
the acquisition of values, beliefs, and expectations seem to be due more to
socialization and unique experiences, especially during childhood. Some hereditary
factors that contribute to personality development do so as a result of interactions with
the particular social environment in which people live. For example: Your name is part
of your identity. The definition of identity is who you are, the way you think about
yourself, the way you are viewed by the world and the characteristics that define
you. An example of identity is a person's name. An example of identity are the
traditional characteristics of you being a Filipino. Identity may be acquired indirectly
from parents, peers, and other role models. Children come to define themselves in
terms of how they think their parents see them. Psychologists assume that identity
formation is a matter of “finding oneself” by matching one's talents and potential with
available social roles. People's personal identity can be shaped in many different
ways. Three factors that are important in shaping one's personal identity include, but
are not limited to, their culture, their memories, and their societal labels.
