SECTION B: READING
Part 1: Read the following passage and choose the correct answer to each of the
questions.
Scientists have established that influenza viruses taken from man can cause
diseases in animals. In addition, man can catch the diseases from animals. In fact, a
greater number of wild birds seem to carry the viruses without showing any evidence of
illness. Some scientists conclude that a large family of influenza viruses may have
evolved in the bird kingdom, a group that has been on earth 100 million years and is
able to carry the viruses without contracting the disease. There is even convincing
evidence to show that virus strain are transmitted from place to place and from
continent to continent by migrating birds.
It is known that two influenza viruses can recombine when both are present in
an animal at the same time. The result of such recombination is a great variety of
strains containing different H and N spikes. This raises the possibility that a human
influenza viruses can recombine with an influenza virus from a lower animal to
produce an entirely new spike. Research is underway to determine if that is the way
major new strains come into being. Another possibility is that two animal influenza
strains may recombine in a pig, for example, to produce a new strain which is
transmitted to man.
11. According to the passage, scientists have discovered that influenza viruses
_______
A. cause ill health in wild animals
B. do not always cause symptoms in birds

A. H and N spikes are produced
B. animal and bird viruses are combined
C. dissimilar types of viruses recombine
D. two viruses of the same type are contracted
14. New strains of viruses are transmitted to man by_______
A. a type of wild pig B. diseased lower animals

C. a group of migrating birds D. a variety of means

15. It can be inferred from the passage that all of the following are ways of
producing new strains of influenza EXCEPT_______
A. two influenza viruses in the same animal recombining
B. animal viruses recombining with human viruses
C. two animal viruses recombining
D. two animal viruses recombining in a human

Part 2: There are 8 mistakes in the following passage. Underline the mistakes and
write the correct answers in the space provided.
Let us suppose that you are in the position of a parent. Would you allow your
children read any book they wanted to without first checking its content? Would you
take them to see any film without first finding whether it is suitable for them? If your
answer of these questions is yes, then you are either extremely permissive, or just plain
irresponsible. If your answer is not, then you are exercising your right as a parent to
protect your children from what you consider to be desirable influences. In other words,
by acting as a censor yourself, you are admitting that there is a strong case for
censorship.
Children need protection and it is the parents' responsible to provide it. But what
about adults? Aren't they old enough to decide that is good for them? The answer is that
many adults are, but don't make the mistake of thinking that all adults are as yourself.
Censorship is for the good of society as a whole. Highly civilized people might find it
possible to live together without laws of any kind: they would just rely on good sense to
solve their problems. But imagine what chaos there would be if we live in a society
without laws! Like the law, censorship contributes to the common good.

SECTION C: WRITING
Part 2: Write a composition about 150-200 words on the following topic:
Some students prefer to study alone. Others prefer to study with a group of students.
Which do you prefer? Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.
Dàn bài tham khảo.

To me, studying alone is a better choice.

Studying with a group - the chance of learning from others.

- discuss together - new ideas and experience.

- make the best use of strong points.

- stimulate the ambition in the hearts.

- as similar as the way that people work in a company - promote our
communicating ability by this way.

Though there are plenty of advantages, studying alone is the most effective way to gain
for me.

- restrain the desire for communicating with others. - distraction holding me back
from concentration - a quiet learning condition.

- need more spirit to understand the obscure knowledge.- essential and cannot be
replaced by discussing with others.

- to avoid thinking deeply.- stop struggling on our own.

Both study styles have their advantages separately, and there is no idea which one is
better. But studying alone must be a more suitable one to me.
