Early Life and
Education
Zakir Husain was born in Hyderabad and was the second of the
seven sons of Fida Husain Khan. His family relocated to Kaimganj in
Uttar Pradesh shortly after his birth.
His parents passed away during his early years. He started his
education journey in Hyderabad and completed his schooling in
Etawah, UP.
He earned his MA degree from the Muhammadan Anglo-Oriental
College, now known as the Aligarh Muslim University. He was a
prominent student leader during his university days.
Apart from being an excellent student, he was also an academic.
He earned his doctoral degree in economics from the University of
Berlin.
Contribution to
Education
•Founding of Jamia Millia Islamia: Back in India, Zakir Husain,
along with his friends, founded Jamia Millia Islamia in 1920.
They wanted to create an educational institution that
combined modern education with Indian values and culture.
•Education as a Tool for Freedom: Zakir believed that
education was a powerful tool to fight against British rule. He
encouraged students to be self-reliant and to contribute to
the nation's freedom struggle through knowledge and
education.
Involvement in the
Freedom Movement
•Joining the Freedom Struggle: Inspired by Mahatma
Gandhi's ideals, Zakir Husain became actively
involved in the Indian freedom movement. He
participated in various protests and worked tirelessly
to promote the cause of independence.
‘•A Visionary Leader: He believed in non-violence and
the power of education to bring about social change.
His efforts helped in uniting people from different
backgrounds towards the common goal of freedom.
Zakir Hussain entered into the National Movement under the
influence of Mahatma Gandhi and took part in Khilafat and Non-
Cooperation Movements. He was offered Naib Tehsildar post by
the British, which was refused by him true to his National ideology.

He wanted to train the youth towards the National Movement.


Thus, he joined as a Lecturer in the Jamia Milia Islamia College,
which was founded during the Khilafat and Non Co-operation
Movement.

Upon his return from Germany in February, 1926, he totally


dedicated himself to the institution. Zakir Hussain’s relentless
efforts have earned Jamia Millia the praise of being the “Healthy
child of the Non-Cooperation Movement.
He encouraged the students and the teachers of the Jamia to
participate in the Salt Satyagraha in 1930. When Gandhi
started collecting ‘Swarajya Fund’, Jamia students, teachers
and employees donated for the first time to the fund under his
guidance.

Dr. Zakir Hussain believed that Hindu-Muslim integrity was


essential for the liberation of country from the British. Hence,
he conducted several programmes and campaigns in this
regard.

After Independence, he took the responsibility as the Vice


Chancellor of the Aligarh Muslim University on the request of
Moulana Abul Kalam Azad and continued in that post till 1956.
He was the member of Rajyasabha during 1952 and 1956. Dr.
Zakir Hussain became the Governor of Bihar in 1957 and the
President of India in 1967.
He certainly strengthened the Indian National Movement by
imparting National Education in the minds of youth of the
country.
Zakir Husain passed away
while in office on May 3,
1969, becoming the first
president to die in office.
