Directions: Read and analyze the passage and answer the questions that follow.
Once upon a time, in a small town, there was a high school called Pine Valley High. Every
year, the school hosted a grand dance, and all the students eagerly awaited the event. This
year was particularly special because it was the last dance for the ninth graders before they
moved on to high school.
Among the students was a girl named Emily, who loved to dance. She had been looking
forward to the dance for weeks. However, there was a small problem—her parents were very
strict. Emily wasn’t sure if they would allow her to go to the dance.
One evening, after dinner, Emily decided to ask her parents for permission.
"Mom, Dad," Emily began hesitantly, "may I go to the school dance next Friday?"
Her mom looked at her dad, and then at Emily. "You know, Emily, you have a big math test
coming up. Do you think you can balance both the test and the dance?"
Emily nodded eagerly. "I promise I’ll study hard all week. Can I please go? I’ve been looking
forward to it for so long!"
Her dad smiled and said, "Well, you may go to the dance if you keep your promise and do
well on your math test."
The next day at school, Emily told her best friend, Sarah, the good news. Sarah was excited
too but had her own doubts.
"I’m not sure if I can go," Sarah admitted. "My parents might not let me. They’re really
worried about my grades."
Emily thought for a moment and then suggested, "Why don’t you ask them politely? You
could tell them that you’ll also focus on your studies, just like I did."
That evening, Sarah approached her parents. "Mom, Dad, could I go to the school dance
next Friday? I know you’re worried about my grades, but I’ll make sure to study every day
until then."
Her parents looked at each other, and her mom finally said, "You may go to the dance,
Sarah, but only if you show us that you’ve been studying hard every day."
As the week went on, both Emily and Sarah studied hard forPhase
their I,tests.
