(d) Answer all the questions in Section I and only five questions from Section II.

5 A Kenyan company received US dollars 100,000.The money was converted into Kenya shillings in a

(a) Calculate the amount of money in Ksh, the company recurred. (1 mark)
(b) The Company changed the Kenya shillings calculated above into sterling pounds to buy a car
in Britain. Calculate the cost of the car to the nearest sterling pounds (2 marks)

10 The average lap time for 3 athletes in a long distance race is 36 seconds, 40 seconds and 48 seconds
respectively. If they all start the race at the same time, find the number of times the slowest runner will
have been overlapped by the fastest at the time they all cross the starting point together again.

14 Three businessmen Mark, Benard and Fred decided to buy a bus. The market price of the bus was
sh2,700,000 which was to be met in equal share. The men could pay a deposit of 60% of the money
and the rest to be paid within one year. They raised the deposit in the ratio 3:2:5 respectively. The
balance was to be paid to the dealer from the proceeds of the bus in the same deposits. During the year
the bus realized sh.2,080,000 which was to be shared in the same ratio of deposit contribution.How
much did Fred remain with at the end of the year (4 marks)

18 Three submarine fighters P, Q, R are such that Q is 400 km on a bearing of 030o from fighter P. Fighter
R is 750km from fighter Q on a bearing of 120o. Another submarine fighter S is 1000km due south of
fighter Q.
(a) Taking a scale of 1cm to represent 100km locate the position of fighters P, Q, R and S. (4 marks)

20 Two friends Jane and Willis live 40 km apart. One day Jane left her house at 9.00 a.m. and cycled
towards Willis’ house at an average speed of 15 km/hr. Willis left at 10.30 a.m. on the same day and
cycled towards Jane’s house at an average speed of 25 km/hr.
(a) Determine;
(i) The distance from Jane’s house, where the two friends met. (3 marks)
(iii) How far Jane was from Willis’ house when they met? (2 marks)
(b) The two friends took 10 minutes at the meeting point and they cycled to Willis’ house at an
average speed of 12km/hr. Find the time they arrived at Willis’ house. (3 marks)

joint examination.

(b) Two institutions, Ogongo High School and Waondo High School, purchased beans at sh. b per
bag and maize at sh. m per bag. Ogongo High school purchased 8 bags of beans and 14 bags of
maize for sh. 47,600. Waondo High school purchased 10 bas of beans and 16 bags of maize for
sh. 57,400.
i) Form matrix equation to represent the information above (1 mark)
ii) Use the matrix method to find the prices of one bag of each item. (4 marks)
(c) The price of beans later went up by 5% and that of maize remained constant. Ogongo High school
bought the same quantity of beans but spent the same total amount of money as before on the two
items. State the new ratio of beans of maize. (3 marks)
