TUTORIAL 9
SERVICEABILITY OF REINFORCED CONCRETE MEMBERS

Task 1

Y Column section

N = 800 kN
40
Mx = 40 kNm
My = 20 kNm

X 320 h = 400

40
4 Y25 bars, As = 491 mm2 each

40 220 40

b = 300
(a) Transform the complete section to an equivalent “all-concrete” one, and find Atotal, Ix, Iy
(b) Find the extreme fibre stresses in the concrete for N, M x and My acting separately
(c) Combine the stresses for N, Mx and My acting simultaneously. Is the section cracked?
(d) Find the reinforcement stresses for N and Mx acting separately.
(e) Find the radii of curvature Rx and Ry.

Task 2
Beam section

x N=0
Sagging Mx only
X

d = 460 h = 500

2 Y25 bars, As = 491 mm2 each

40

40 120 40

b = 200

(a) Transform the complete section to an equivalent “all-concrete” one and then find Atotal, the
centroidal axis depth x , and Ix,total. For Mx = 10 kNm, find the extreme fibre concrete stresses
and the reinforcement stress. Is the section cracked?
(b) Increase Mx to 50 kNm and recalculate the stresses for (a). Check for cracking.

Properties
Concrete: fcu = 30 MPa; fct = - 3 MPa; Ec = 27 GPa;
Reinforcing Steel: fy = 450 MPa; Es = 200 GPa; take αe = 7,4
