Exit Ticket -

Properties of
Macromolecules
Total points 20/20

Following our class discussion and our

learning from videos and readings,
complete this short, ungraded exit ticket.
This is a chance to check your
understanding and reveal areas with
misunderstandings. Use this to identify
content that should be reviewed, or
discussed further during oJce hours. This
is an excellent way to see what level of
understanding you should have on our next
formal assessment (quiz).

I have a large role in muscle 1/1

development.

Carbohydrate

Lipid

Protein

Nucleic Acid

Feedback

Proteins are a key component in making

up the muscles of our cells. They
contain many different amino acids,
which when bonded together can create
the different types of structures & cells,
including muscles, that our bodies
needs to survive.

Vegetable oils such as corn oil, 1/1

belong to which general class of
organic substances?

lipids

proteins

carbohydrates

nucleic acids

Feedback

Lipids are the fats, including oils.

Proteins are mainly found in meats and
seeds, carbohydrates are the sugars
found in fruits, vegetables and some
dairy, and nucleic acids are the DNA and
RNA in each cell.

I am important for insulation 1/1

and staying warm

Carbohydrate

Lipid

Protein

Nucleic Acid

Feedback

Lipids, or fats, are an important form of

long term energy storage. They also help
create a layer that traps heat inside the
body. For example, seals have a thick
layer a blubber, or fat, to keep warm.

The molecule shown below is 1/1

an example of which
macromolecule?

Carbohydrate

Lipid

Protein

Nucleic Acid

Feedback

Carbohydrate molecules have only CHO

elements in them. You can tell them
apart from other molecules because of
their chemical composition, and
because they form "rings" as their main
shape.

My category includes genetic 1/1

material.

Carbohydrate

Lipid

Protein

Nucleic Acid

Feedback

Nucleic acids are the macromolecule

that contains all the DNA and RNA
which acts as a blueprint for life.

I contain the instructions for 1/1

building proteins

Carbohydrate

Lipid

Protein

Nucleic Acid

Feedback

DNA, a type of nucleic acid, is the

"blueprint" for life because it contains
the instructions to build proteins. This is
a topic we will cover more in depth in the
spring.

The molecule shown below is 1/1

an example of which
macromolecule?

Carbohydrate

Lipid

Protein

Nucleic Acid

Feedback

Protein molecules have CHON elements

in them. You can tell them apart from
other molecules because of their
chemical composition, and because
they will have the central shape, and a
unique R group.

The molecule shown below is 1/1

an example of which
macromolecule?

Carbohydrate

Lipid

Protein

Nucleic Acid

Feedback

Lipid molecules have CHO elements in

them. You can tell them apart from other
molecules because of their chemical
composition, and because they form
long chains of carbon and hydrogen
atoms.

Which molecule(s) contain the 1/1

elements carbon, hydrogen,
oxygen? (Check all that apply)

Carbohydrates

Lipids

Proteins

Nucleic Acids

Feedback

All four macromolecules contain the

elements CHO. Carbohydrates and lipids
contain only CHO, but proteins (CHON)
and nucleic acids (CHONP) also have
these elements.

I am useful for a fast source of 1/1

energy.

Carbohydrate

Lipid

Protein

Nucleic Acid

Feedback

Carbohydrates, sugars, are the easiest

energy source for our bodies. When we
need energy fast, sugars are the best
option. Our body will convert lipids and
proteins into sugars to use for energy,
but this takes much longer, since the fat
or protein has to change into sugar
before it gets used.

Which molecule(s) contain the 1/1

elements carbon, hydrogen,
oxygen and nitrogen? (Check all
that apply)

Carbohydrates

Lipids

Proteins

Nucleic Acids

Feedback

Only proteins & nucleic acids contain

nitrogen. Carbohydrates and lipids
contain only CHO, but proteins (CHON)
and nucleic acids (CHONP) also have
nitrogen, in addition to CHO.

The monomers used to 1/1

synthesize proteins are called:

nucleotides

amino acids

fatty acids

monosaccharides

Feedback

The monomer of a protein is an amino

acid. Nucleotides are the monomer for
nucleic acids. Fatty acids are the
monomer of lipids. Monosaccharides
are the monomer of carbohydrates

I am helpful for long term 1/1

energy storage.

Carbohydrate

Lipid

Protein

Nucleic Acid

Feedback

Lipids, or fats, are the way that our body

stores extra energy. It is more stable and
easy to store than carbohydrates. When
we do need energy, our bodies will
convert the lipids back into useable
sugars for fast energy

I have involvement in the 1/1

immune system (ex:
antibodies).

Carbohydrate

Lipid

Protein

Nucleic Acid

Feedback

Antibodies are a form of polypeptide,

otherwise known as proteins. This is
one example of the large range of
functions that proteins are used for in
our bodies. Some are called enzymes
and they help chemical reactions occur.
Some proteins build structures in a cell
or form things such as hair or
fingernails. Some proteins are
messengers or receivers of messages.
Some proteins, such as hemoglobin,
transport other molecules.

If athletes “pasta load,” they 1/1

consume a lot of me.

Carbohydrate

Lipid

Protein

Nucleic Acid

Feedback

Pastas are a form of starch. Starch is a

polymer in the carbohydrate family.
Since carbohydrates, and sugars, are the
fastest energy source, athletes carbo-
load with pasta to ensure they have
enough energy to compete in their sport.

I make up cell membranes. 1/1

Carbohydrate

Lipid

Protein

Nucleic Acid

Feedback

One type of lipid, the phospholipid, is

one of the main components in cell
membranes. We will learn more about
this in the spring, but this is one of the
reasons it is important that we consume
some fats in our diet.

Which of the following would 1/1

most likely qualify as a
macromolecule? (Check all that
apply)

Protein

DNA

Fat

Sugar

Feedback

The four main macromolecules are

carbohydrates, also known as sugars;
lipids, also know as fats; proteins; and
nucleic acids, either DNA or RNA

Which molecule(s) contain the 1/1

elements carbon, hydrogen,
oxygen, nitrogen and
phosphorus? (Check all that
apply)

Carbohydrates

Lipids

Proteins

Nucleic Acids

Feedback

Only nucleic acids contain phosphorus.

Carbohydrates and lipids contain only
CHO and proteins CHON, but nucleic
acids (CHONP) also have phosphorus, in
addition to CHON.

The molecule shown below is 1/1

an example of which
macromolecule?

Carbohydrate

Lipid

Protein

Nucleic Acid

Feedback

Nucleic acid molecules have CHONP

elements in them. You can tell them
apart from other molecules because of
their chemical composition, and
because they are made up of a sugar
ring, phosphate group and unique
nitrogen base.

Enzymes, which can speed up 1/1

reactions, belong in my
category.

Carbohydrate

Lipid

Protein

Nucleic Acid

Feedback

Enzymes are one of the forms of

proteins. Some proteins build structures
in a cell or form things such as hair or
fingernails. Some proteins are
messengers or receivers of messages.
Some proteins, such as hemoglobin,
transport other molecules. Other
proteins, such as antibodies, help
defend against diseases.
