• Write the answer of the following questions. [Each carries 2 Marks] [6]
1. A horizontal straight wire 10 m long extending from east to west is falling with a speed of
5.0 m s–1, at right angles to the horizontal component of the earth’s magnetic field, 0.30 ´ 10–4 Wb m–2.
Which end of the wire is at the higher electrical potential ? (Que. Bank - 2024)
2. Explain in brief the phenomenon of self-induction. Derive the formula for self-induced emf.
(March - 2022)
3. A 44 mH inductor is connected to 220 V, 50 Hz ac supply. Determine the rms value of the current
in the circuit. (March - 2022)

• Write the answer of any 2 questions from given questions. [Each carries 3 Marks] [6]
4. A circular coil of radius 8 cm and 20 turns is rotated about its vertical diameter with an angular speed
of 50 rad s–1 in a uniform horizontal magnetic field of magnitude 3 ´ 10–2 T. Obtain the maximum
and average emf induced in the coil. If the coil forms a closed loop of resistance 10 W calculate the
maximum value of current in the coil.
(March - 2022)
5. A resistor of 200 W and a capacitor of 15.0 mF are connected in series to a 220 V, 50 Hz ac source.
(a) Calculate the current in the circuit;
(b) Calculate the voltage (rms) across the resistor and the capacitor. Is the algebraic sum of these
voltages more than the source voltage ? If yes, resolve the paradox.
6. Suppose the frequency of the source in the previous example can be varied.
(a) What is the frequency of the source at which resonance occurs ?
(b) Calculate the impedance, the current and the power dissipated at the resonant condition.
