Answer the following:

1. Discuss briefly the food and hunger situation in the Philippines.

Food scarcity in the Philippines is not a new phenomenon. The country continues to
experience significant social, gender, and economic inequality despite its steady economic
growth. Although there is more food available in the markets, hunger and malnutrition are still
issues, particularly in low-income Filipino households. One reason for this is that the country’s
poorest rely upon agriculture for income and sustenance, making them particularly vulnerable to
extreme weather conditions and the destruction caused by natural disasters. The WFP estimates
that 25% of agricultural households in the Philippines suffer from food insecurity. As per a
survey conducted by Social Weather Stations (SWS), the number of Filipino families who were
facing hunger peaked in the fourth quarter of 2023.

The FAO cited an “increasing population, limited resources and natural disasters” as
contributing to the country’s worsening hunger problem, which has been further exacerbated by
the COVID-19 pandemic. These circumstances make severe undernutrition a growing threat to
Filipino children. Micronutrient undernutrition, or the inadequate consumption of vital vitamins
and minerals, affects a large number of Filipino children as well. About 38% of infants aged 11
months and under and 26% of children aged 12 to 23 months suffer from micronutrient
undernutrition. Undernutrition not only poses serious health risks to an individual, but it also
negatively impacts the nation's overall economic and human development by seriously impeding
children's cognitive development.

2. What are the three (3) most important things that you believe should be done to reduce
hunger in our country?
The primary priority should be ensuring food security for the Philippines. The nation is
home to some of the poorest and most marginalized citizens due to its rich maritime resources
and fertile soil, and to evaluate, these factors must be taken into account:

a. Raise Your Voice Against Hunger

Self-Defense Against Food Poverty As a result, the Philippines can help those affected by
political upheaval and natural disasters. Furthermore, it has established safety net programs to
help the impoverished take back control of their lives by giving them food and training in useful
occupations.

b. Food Poverty Initiatives

Establishing the foundation for sustained independence is the aim. Given the high proportion of
Filipinos living in poverty, long-term development initiatives have been given top priority under
the Food and Hunger programs. The goals of these programs are to lessen poverty and encourage
healthy eating.

c. Efforts to Prevent Hunger

Programs for those in need of food and livelihood. Action Against Hunger, which focuses on
community-led projects, also provides support to communities affected by natural disasters and
conflict.

3. Give the roles of government organizations (GO's) and non-government organizations

(NGO's) to combat these (hunger) problems in our country.
Government and NGOs (non-governmental organizations) are two essential pillars leading the
fight against hunger. To combat hunger and solve food insecurity in the nation, the Philippine
government aims and attempts to eliminate hunger are laid forth in this new National Food
Policy'. There is now an inter-agency task force on zero hunger in place inside the Government
Organization (GO) to help alleviate hunger and ensure food security for more Filipinos.
Meanwhile, Non Government Organization (NGO) worries about involuntary hunger, including
food production and distribution, as well as concerns about malnourishment are being addressed
through the "Pilipinas Kontra Gutom" program, which includes the government, academic
institutions as well as non-profit organisations and commercial enterprises.
