GR 10 GEOGRAPHY TEST TWO

1.4 Study the infographic bellow showing over population in South Africa and answer the
questions that follow.

By Sonia Madaan
Overpopulation is the state whereby the human population rises to an extent exceeding
the carrying capacity of the ecological setting. In an overpopulated environment, the
numbers of people might be more than the available essential materials for survival such
as transport, water, shelter, food, or social amenities. This regularly contributes to
environmental deterioration, worsening in the quality of life, or even the disintegration of
the population. South Africa population has been growing fast despite being hit by the
HIV/AIDS pandemic in the early 1990 and COVID 19 pandemic recently. The decline in
mortality rates, medical breakthroughs, and increased birth rates, populations will always
increase and eventually give rise to overpopulation.

THE BRAIN DRAIN DUE TO EMIGRATION.

Skilled South Africans of all races are leaving the country in a new wave of emigration. A
worldwide survey has singled out South Africa as the country second only to Russia in
which well-educated people are least likely to stay. Several travel agencies and international
removal companies said the increase in the number of people leaving the country backed
the findings of the survey.

Reasons given by emigrants included a drop in the standard of education and health
services, affirmative action, crime, and the falling value of the rand. People have also
expressed fears that the land-grab fiasco in Zimbabwe could also happen here.
